Thorough explanation of Eagle Layers

echrisdenney
echrisdenney over 9 years ago

I'm trying to put together a really helpful, thoroughly detailed document, that explains what the layers of Eagle are used for by default and how engineers should make the best use of them. I want to include screenshot examples and explanations of what happens to that layer after the engineer is done with it. In other words how does a manufacturer interpret this particular layer and what do they do with it. What does the DRC do with it.

I've started a very VERY rough draft here. But I'm really not all that knowledgeable about Eagle. So I was hoping the community might be interested in helping me out. Any input would be appreciated it. Also, if such a document already exists (which I've been unable to find) please let me know and I'll gladly drop this project and use it.

The manual and tutorial documents that come with Eagle are the definitive

    source.

Layers in Eagle only pertain to the CAD program. As you move on to

manufacturing you usually pass them Gerbers files which relate to the CAD

layers but are often a combination of layers. The manufacturer sees these

    files as a layer each.

You're completely right Warren. I guess my goal with this though is to get a little more thorough detail than the manual provides.

I am the manufacturer, so I know what details I need in the gerber data. But what I'm finding is that customers are sending us incomplete gerber files. Data about polarity would sometimes be in layers that did not get printed in the silkscreen. So I'm trying to put together a really nice, helpful document to send to customers that can help them make the path to manufacturing easier. I'm hoping that in this effort, it might also become a valuable resource for the community.

    Thanks

One of the problems the new user runs into is that silk screen data is

not in the correct layers in the parts they use. Normally Tplace has the

info for silk. Tdoc has additional info for assembly documentation.

Yes, we have definitely seen that. And that's ok. Because so long as we still get the tDocu gerber file, we can at least interpret what direction parts are supposed to go, even if the polarity itself is not on the silkscreen layer. However, we've been finding some customers use a completely different layer, the tName for polarity info, which doesn't generally get exported as a gerber file. Once we explained to them what happened they updated their files to prevent it from happening again. Hopefully having a nice clean page like this that we can send them will be helpful.
