Change the default via  shape

Pedro147
Pedro147 over 9 years ago

I want to change the default via  shape from square to round and a few people have said to edit the eagle file at "C:\Program Files\EAGLE-7.4.0\scr\eagle" in particular the BRD section
Here is what my default eagle file at the BRD section looks like.

BRD:
MENU '[designlink22.png] Search and order : Run designlink-order.ulp -general;'\
     '[pcb-service.png] PCB Service : Run pcb-service.ulp;'\
'[idf-3d.png] Export to IDF 3D format: Run eagleidfexporter.ulp;'\
;

The two edits suggested say to add "CHANGE SHAPE ROUND;"

If I try to do this in the Windows 7 text editor by double clicking the eagle.scr file, when I go to save the edit I am told that I cannot rename the file.

So next I tried to do this in Notepad++ but when I go to save the edited file it asks me to check to see if I have it open in another program which I do not.

It really shouldn't be this hard to change should it? What am I doing wrong please.

You may need to start your text editor in administrator mode to save to

it. The file lies in a protected area.

I should specify how.. Right click your editor program icon, choose "run

    as administrator".

    Windows problem image

I guess thats just half the truth image

Cadsoft has not put any resources into making a good windows "app". Yes

it sucks that you have to take care of that in a separate os-specific

way. I have no idea if QT can help there. Like linux wants their scripts

maybe in the /etc folder, windows have a os specific path as well.

Configuration files should not lie in the protected executable area. And

executables should not be installed on any root drive.

I myself manually install the exe in the protected area, and if cadsoft

just installed the user/config files into the proper location (roaming

or local userprofile), everything would work just fine (I think, Im not

    a professional windows developer)..

    Hi Morton,

if I overdo a little, I don't even know how to spell windows image

I have different logical drives on my win system 8.1/64 but since ages I

    install eagle like this example:

On  setup I tell win to install eagle in E:/eagle-6.6.0 i.e.

After that I install my libraries and projects in different locations.

In control panel I enter the paths to the locations and that is it.

On my C-drive is windows only and nothing else.

I also run an eagle 5 installation and by using the U-parameter I

instruct each eagle what location and name to use for the eaglerc.usr

    file. (I.e. eaglerc-512.usr located somewhere)

    So no sweat image

Thanks CadSoft Guest. I tried to edit it on my work Windows 7 PC and had no problem editing and saving the eagle.scr file. This did change the default via shape from square to round. I might just copy this modified file and replace the one on my home PC with it instead. Windows is so annoying as I am the administrator of the account and have set myself to have access to everything. I should be used to the way it operates I suppose image

Just to close this question, I just made a new eagle.scr file with the addition of the required round via shape and replaced the default eagle.scr file with this and my problem is resolved. Thank you all for your help
