Eagle 4.16 / Win10 - Very slow redraw - any solution?

tony1980

Hi,

Is there any solution for the very, very slow redraw (both in schematic and board editors) with Eagle 4.16 on Windows 10?

Originally purchased Professional edition 4 of Eagle years ago and used on a XP machine for years without issue. Now migrating to new laptop and installed my Eagle on Windows 10 and the redraw is horrendously slow - with my designs taking 5-10 seconds every time the viewpoint is moved and I can see it slowly build up on screen - so it's impossible to work with at this pace!

When checking on Cadsoft's site the upgrade cost for my license to Eagle 7 Ultimate is nearly 600 euros so that's currently not an affordable option. Have had to resort to creating a virtual machine running XP to continue my work.

Eagle uses some video driver calls that are not used by many programs.

Still running 4.xx but under Linux. Gave up windows when 95 was broken

    by backported 98 video driver.

Under Linux 4.16 does work with compositing mode of the window manager.

    All the windows are transparent.

It would be a lighter setup to run Linux in a virtual machine and

    install the Linux version.

What I have read that Win 10 seems to support running Linux binary files.

Here is the link to version 4.16

    ftp://ftp.cadsoft.de/eagle/program/4.16r2/

Maybe some one with win 10 is up to speed on that possibility.

I also have Win 10 and EAGLE 4.16 (and newer versions). I just ran EAGLE

using XP SP3 compatibility mode. (properties/compatibility) Redraws are

noticeably slow, but no more than a second. I think that 5 - 10 second

    redraws would drive me crazy!

As far as I am aware, Windows has never been able to run any Linux

binaries,  It is however possible to run a Linux virtual machine

inside Windows. Since M$ is moving to a "Pay to use" model, moving to

Linux might be a more sensible way to go.

Thanks for your responses - I had already tried the XP Compatiblity modes when I had it installed on Windows 10 and that did not make any difference in speed for me.

As I now have it running properly under a XP Virtual Machine there is no need for me to try the Linux version under a Linux VM. I was just looking for a solution to run it natively without the horrendous slow down!

The lack of useful command line tools in Windows has been such a pain

result, that MS have finally tried to fix it... by implementing a "brand

new compatibility concept" of providing a wrapper for the Linux API to

map it to Windows API. In other words, a direct opposite clone of

"Wine", which has been available on Linux for years. This new wrapper

allows most of Ubuntu to be installed within Win10. However, like Wine

before it, there are severe limits on compatibility and I doubt Eagle

    would run within it.

Thank you for that information. The last version of Windows that I had

anything to do with was Vista. I used to run Wine just so I could run

LTSpice, but that's all.  Nowadays Linux serves all I need.
