As retired hobby only user, the restrictions of the free version were no problem for me personally.
Is this concession now to be withdrawn, forcing hobbyists to either stick with the old versions or pay commercial rates for non-commercial use?

This is the second post along these lines I have seen today. There is still
a freeware version with v8 so you shouldn't have any issues there. To
download the latest version of EAGLE go here:
http://www.autodesk.com/products/eagle/free-download
You'll need to sign in with an Autodesk account to activate your newly
installed v8 EAGLE. If you don't have an active EAGLE subscription it will
activate in the freeware version with the freeware limits of 80 square cm
board area an 2 layers.
Best Regards,
Rachael
