why is my package disabled in Device Editor

Noob question: I'm following & enjoying the tutorial at https://learn.adafruit.com/ktowns-ultimate-creating-parts-in-eagle-tutorial/introduction & the following pages, but am stuck in the device editor. My newly created package is visible in the 'Create New Package Variant' dialog, but it's greyed-out and cannot be selected. Any clues as to what I've got wrong would be gratefully received.

    Hi!

     

    You've already added a schematic symbol for your device. Packages that

    have not enough pads for all the symbol's pins get greyed-out. So you

    either added the wrong symbol for the device or you're trying to select

    a wrong package. Or maybe you created the symbol with too many pins.

     

    BTW: As being a new user, you should definitively look into another ECAD

    package, KiCad for example. This is more future proof. Landscape will

    change because of bad things happening at Autodesk, the new owner of

    EAGLE. From  the adafruit blog:
