Trying to decide whether to buy linux or windows license

Hi,

I am trying to decide whether I should buy a linux license or a windows

license for eagle. I really want to use eagle under linux, but I have a

few concerns:

- I am using gentoo linux. This linux distribution is moving quite fast

and so I am updating the distribution quite often. So, three important

external dependencies of eagle will change quite often, which are

Xorg, the linux kernel and cups printing system. I am afraid that

eagle will stop working at some point in the future because of an

incompatibility. What kind of experiences did the community have in

this regard? Are the developers of eagle keen to make eagle work with

the new versions of the X windows environment and the kernel? Or is

there a "recommended linux distribution" and with any other linux, you

  are on your own?

- Manufacturers of printers tend to focus on developing windows

drivers. I am afraid I will run into limitations and issues regarding

to printing when I use the linux version.

I would hate to have to use eagle under windows, so I hope to hear that

I don't have to worry about the above ...

    Greetings Timur Aydin,

I also use Gentoo, and opted to buy the Linux license.

I don't use CUPS (it never wanted to work for me, so I reverted to

lprng) but I keep my Gentoo boxes fully up-to-date.

Eagle has never stopped working for me. Several of the Gentoo maintained

packages have, I might add, but never Eagle.

    - Manufacturers of printers tend to focus on developing windows

drivers. I am afraid I will run into limitations and issues regarding

Again, I can't comment on CUPS or any brand-new-and-disimproved printer

you might buy. All I can say is that printing from Eagle on a Gentoo box

to a HP Laserjet 4 with NetJet card works fine for me.

Well based on my experience I'd say you should be fine on Gentoo. You

might want to avoid KDE, though, because it has some unfortunate

keyboard mappings (it grabs  which Eagle would like to

    use for alternate grid placements).
