hierarchy design

Hello All,

I've done a quick search through the newsgroups, but didn't find any thing

related to design reuse or a hierarchy design. I am new to Eagle and am

wondering if there is a way to reuse designs? I have a board with 4 copies

of the same schematic and some other schematics holding it all together. I

have copied and pasted the relevant schematics, however I would like to have

eagle place them on the board and route them based on a single board. Is

this possibe?

there is no such thing like "hierarchy design" in Eagle, alltrough we all

    want-it.

And there is definitely no way to get it in v.5 ;-((

No. It would be nice to see some noises coming from Cadsoft regarding this

and a few other major improvements

The cheap and dirty work around is to start things off with only a single

section and lay it out. This is then grouped, cut and copied into a new

    design as required.

This is a slightly convoluted process. Go and look at a post from 23/1/2008

from Mickey Reilley who has posted a reasonable summary of the process to

copy this layout into a new design.

    cheers

    Yes,

seeing some kind of ACK from Cadsoft that a proposal was read and

understood would make me feel easier. Matching the long list of proposals I

made over the year with the V5 beta makes me worry which of these proposal

will get implemented before I retire.

    It starts with multi-line texts.

    Absolutely

Many years ago Cadsoft produced a roadmap when going from was it v3 to v4,

and it was really good see that there was a definite path for development.

As well as showing some concern for functions that users were looking for,

it certainly made me comfortable to buy into Eagle for all our design work.

V5 is not even out but I think it is time to dust off your list again and

stick it up on user chat or suggest, say and see if we can get some response

from Cadsoft as to where things are going to go, at least within 5.0-5.1-5.2

    sort of development frame.

    cheers

Agreed. I'm quite surprised Eagle hasn't outlined a dev path... And

their response level to many of the good user suggestions isn't

encouraging IMO... It's nice to see progress being made, but there are

some really important basic things that need to be addressed which

    haven't been. I won't re-list any here, but they've been talked about

    many times.

I'd like to see some sort of new feature polls, where payed users vote

on new feature suggestions. After a few months, Eagle selects a couple

of the top ranked suggestions that they otherwise had not intended to

work on (either for that revision or ever) and seriously attempts to

provide them for the next revision. I know I'm dreaming, but...

great idea! And vice versa there may be also list for not important features

to indicate to CadSoft what users appreciate and what not.

    I vote for it!

    ok

    who implement this, and where?

I think one of us (users) should do this job

That's a very good question.  It is easy to propose these ideas image but

implementing them, successfully, is another issue.

As I see it there are two obvious routes

    a) set up some web based app that does it all. Providing a template for

something similar already exists, sounds simple image but no doubt would take

significant commitment from someone to set this up... any takers?

    b) do a quick and dirty version here. which would go something like

    1. establish a basic list to be used e.g.

    1. hierarchical schematics

    2. import dxf

    3. design re-use support

    4. teardrops

    5. explicit name for schematic sheets

    6. on the fly DRC for track spacing

    etc...

    2. users gets to make 3-5, say, (TBD) choices,

and as long as everyone cuts and pastes from the original list, put in a tab

say, then your prefernce,1-2-3- etc, e.g.

    1. hierarchical schematics     1

    3. design re-use support     2

    6. on the fly DRC for track spacing     3

Then this can be cut and pasted into a spreadsheet and sorted by column for

    analysis relatively easily.

Again this is just some quick thoughts on it, any other suggestions or

    alternative views would be good.

    Advantages of this approach

    quick (and dirty)

open - everyone can see the data

The guys at Cadsoft can see it... if nothing else it shows them that the

users care and are concerned about the product.

Does not require a great deal of effort from any single individual to set-up

Can be analysed by anyone.. if cadsoft are interested they can do it..

although I imagine there concerns lie elsewhere right now with the v5 release.

Alternatively I'm sure there must be several of the university based users

who have lots of time on their hands and could look after it all image

In any event the first step is establishing a reasonable list of proposed

improvements.  So any user (Uwe?) with a reasonable list who would be

prepared to set things off and post their list?

We should also take this probably to userchat for the moment, and then

eagle.suggest when/if some conclusions can be established. Follups set to

    userchat.

    cheers

    David
