Backwards compatibility 5.0 and 4.x

A question about backwards compatibility between V5 and V4.x: Is there a

problem if I work with projects in V5 and then again with V4 ?

I don't intend to look back myself, but what is about a board house

still on V4 and I send them a V5 brd file ?

Files that are made in version 5 can't be read in 4.x again. There

are lots of changes in the data structure that are irreversible.

If you send the board file to a board house it shouldn't be problem.

In case they can download the Freeware from the web and make

    manufacturing data with it.

    Hello Richard,

I assume this is true of libraries as well.  Can you confirm?

This means one needs to manage the transition well because you'll need two

different libraries if you ever need to maintain old designs.  Not an

unusual problem during CAD upgrades but one that everyone should be aware

    of.

    Cheers,

    James.

    That is correct.

    of.

That's why we have written the following into the UPDATE file:

WARNING: Due to some necessary changes in the data structure once you edit

a file with version 5.0 you will no longer be able to edit it

              with versions prior to 5.0!

PLEASE MAKE BACKUP COPIES OF YOUR CURRENT BOARD-, SCHEMATIC- AND

LIBRARY-FILES BEFORE EDITING THEM WITH VERSION 5.0!
