User Interface Questions

I'm a new user of Eagle, but am familiar with doing PCB Sch and Layout

from an old version of OrCAD. Eagle seems to miss making important

repetitive tasks easy to do.  I'm hoping that you will have some ways to

  make the following tasks quicker.

In Schematic:

Can you name a net, and display the name in one step?

Is there a way to automate a repetitive naming sequence like Gain1,

Gain2, Gain3?

Can you tie a pin to a net without putting a net stub on the pin and

naming it?

In Layout:

Is it possible to select groups of parts a move them without constantly

switching between GROUP and MOVE? It seems that I should be able to move

parts around on the board without wearing my left hand out switching

between modes 1000 times.

In the same way, having to switch from ROUTE, RIPUP, and MOVE constantly

while manually routing just seems like a lot of extra work that the

computer could be doing for me.  When I'm routing is there a way to

move, add, and delete routes without constantly banging out shortcuts?

Can you make a shortcut to switch from the top and bottom layers while

routing?

Thanks

Jay

well...i have some of the same frustrations, mostly you get used to it.

I think that the middle mouse button will allow you to switch layers

while you route though, if that helps

    Yes. INFO.

Is there a way to automate a repetitive naming sequence like Gain1, Gain2,

    Gain3?

No. Often requested. Reiterating the request here.

Can you tie a pin to a net without putting a net stub on the pin and

    naming it?

No, only with the stub. But I see no disadvantage here.

Is it possible to select groups of parts a move them without constantly

switching between GROUP and MOVE? It seems that I should be able to move

No. Some other software I use does allow selecting then moving a group,

which is nice, but the consequence is that the functionality of the

selection is kind of restricted. If you want to do more than selecting

rectangles you will need to assert a special command, as I think. You may

accelerate things a bit by ASSIGNing GROUP and MOVE to keys. Good enough, if

    you ask me.

In the same way, having to switch from ROUTE, RIPUP, and MOVE constantly

while manually routing just seems like a lot of extra work that the

computer could be doing for me.  When I'm routing is there a way to move,

add, and delete routes without constantly banging out shortcuts?

I hear you... yes, there may be smarter ways to implement all this,

including GROUP, just a matter of brain juice. On the other hand I doubt

Cadsoft will give up their "well established" user interface approach. And

    imagine the user response...

Can you make a shortcut to switch from the top and bottom layers while

    routing?

    Thanks

    Jay

If you disable all inner layers you can switch between top and bottom with a

single click of the middle mouse button, and without going through the

selection menu. Again, good enough to me.

    Hi there!

How would you do this? To me, it says that I cannot disable inner

layers, even though I am only using top and bottom...

Yep, that works! However, if after doing that I go back to the (1*16) it

remains with just those two layers as well. Is this a bug or what? image

    Thanks a lot!
