Moving Pins on Microprocessor

Hello,

 

I have created a 'generic' symbol for a microcontroller in a library.  The

symbol has all of the port pins grouped logically, power and ground

connections, crystal... etc

 

When I bring the part into a design, I like to move the pins around the

microcontroller to match up with the interface circuitry easily.

 

Is there a way to move the pins on the 'local copy' of the symbol, or must I

edit the library copy and update the symbol in the schematic?

    If you really want different appearance of the symbols, you need to

    create different symbols (and devices!) in the library.

     

    Since you would end up with a unmaintainable library mess, I strongly

    suggest to use "fixed" symbols and draw the schematics accordingly.

     

    I most often draw only net stubs (with labels) at the controller, and

    reuse these nets elsewhere in the circuit. This has the advantage that

    it's easy to swap port pins (where allowed) to match the board layout

    during routing. Using a bus might also help in several cases.

    The only sensible way to do this is to make all the individual pins

    separate, rather as a number of the connector components are. If all the

    pins are set to "always" add, then placing the component will place all

    the pins in the order they appear in the library device. This would give

    the appearance of your current generic symbol. Then you can move the

    pins around on the schematic as you like.

     

    That said, I'd recommend against that level of partitioning. If the

    micro in question has more than 40 port pins you may want to create each

    port (group of 8) as a separate entity. Any further just gets horribly

    messy.
