The standard edition of eagle can't perform the requested action !

I have to modify an existing eagle schematic/pcb.

This pcb have 4 layers.

 

I bought the "Standart edition" licence of Eagle, which normaly can perform: 99 schematic sheets, 6 signal layers, 160x100mm routing area.

I'm under Linux, and installed the package of my distribution ( Ubuntu ), Eagle is in 5.7.0 version .

The license seems to be correctly registered in the software.

Is there a way to exatly know what is blocking the software ?

The Standard Edition support 6 signal layers (1,2,3,14,15,16)

from version 5.8.0 on. Please install the newer EAGLE software

and it will work.

I've seen boards using layers 1,2,3,4,5 & 16.

Is there a way to get such boards editable with the standard edition?

I think that is your problem.  The "EAGLE way" of doing that is to add

layers in pairs, starting from outside in.  So I think the 6 layer license

expects you to use layers 1,2,3,14,15,16.  CadSoft, can you confirm?

this is correct. We use layers 1 2 3 1 4 15 16.

I asked just out of curiosity (and because I too thought that might be

the OTs problem)
