DXF Import

Former Member
Former Member over 14 years ago

I have been unsuccessful trying to import a relatively simple dxf file into Eagle 5.11. I have tried 3 3rd party tools/scripts: demo version of DXF to Eagle Script Converter 2.3.3 (from Falk Stricker's Eagle PCB Power Tools), dxf2Eagle.exe version 1_14_3 (at http://www.mikrocontroller.net/topic/61385), and import_dxf_polygons.ulp (from Eagle website, downloads section). Only the demo version of DXF to Eagle Script Converter 2.3.3 was able to import fragments (which weren't coherent) of the .dxf. The other two tools could not import the .dxf after trying several different export options from Solid Works. I can view the .dxf in Solid Works eDrawings. I was able to import a test .dxf into all three Eagle .dxf tools/scripts.

Can someone advise on a reliable, fully functional DXF import tool for Eagle 5.11? I know Eagle 5.11 comes standard with the import DXF script; am I missing the export DXF script somewhere?

Thanks.

Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

I hope you are doing well.

The normal tools work just fine provided you meet one very critical

condition. The dxf file you give to dxf2scr(example) must be exploded

aka no polylines otherwise none of the available dxf import tools will

    work properly.

The export tool I like to use, is the included cam2dxf.ulp I've never

    had any problems with it.

I have a dxf from my customer that I have to use.

How do I import this into Eagle?

Hi Bruce, also check out this post, this method works for me (I didn't want to pay for a third-party DXF converter), although it is a multi-step thing. In summary I use inkscape as my engine to convert from many formats (including DXF) to an intermediate format (HPGL).

Then I convert HPGL into EAGLE format using a simple C program.

You may have to mess around with scaling, but in principle this method usually works quite well in the limited conversions I do.

    Shabaz,

Got inkscape, when try to compile c code, get Fatal error: unable to open input file 'string'.

I'm not C proficient, i also do not see the file string.  I have tried loading TCC and DMC.

    Thanks

    Hi Bruce,

I just tried it on a Linux box, and it compiled ok.

    I typed:

    g++ hpgl2eagle1.c

It generated a program called a.out

(or type g++ hpgl2eagle1.c -o hpgl2eagle  to call it something more useful).

If it still doesn't work for you, can you paste the command you're typing, and the output?

The program should also compile for other platforms (e.g. Windows - but that requires (say) cygwin).

The "string" header is part of the C++ standard library. What platform

are you on? I assume it's not Windows because you'd use the installer if

you were. So perhaps you're on Ubuntu and you've not got the "devel"

    library packages installed?
