Eagle versions - limitations

Former Member
Former Member over 14 years ago

Hi,

I have the light edition installed, and its doing its job pretty well.

I have the need to move some components however and would like to 'unplace' them - ie move OFF the layout area temporarily.

If I try to do this I get a warning that 'Light edition can't perform the requested action'.

So - is there a list somewhere of the features/limitations of the various versions please ???.

I don't simply mean the 1 schematic/board size etc. which are well documented, but these other more subtle differences.

The board size and 1 schematic is not really an issue for me at this time - but these other 'niggles' are starting to get me down ;-).

Obviously I want to know that if I upgrade to Std - this limitation won't be present etc. - or the upgrade would just be a waste of cash...

Many Thanks

Graham

    Hi Graham,

The Light version is limited to a board size of 80 x 100mm and components cant be placed or moved outside this area.

What niggles are concerning you? I will try to answer these and help you through

    Best regards

    Peter

    Peter,

Thanks for the response. The main issue is that mentioned in the original posting, the inability to move components back off the board again :-O.

Which version actually does support this functionality ??. If I have to upgrade - then I need to know what to buy :-O.

It would also be very useful to know what other features are not available in the lower levels :-O.

With a message box just popping up saying its not supported is not very user-friendly :-((.

I am also trying to find how to move a component from the top to the bottom of the board....

    Many Thanks

    Graham

    bottom of the board....

I believe the issue isn't components on or off the board.  The issue is

that EAGLE Lite allows for an area of 80x100mm for component origins to be

placed.  You can get traces and other features outside of that area but not

component origins.  So when you are moving components "off of your board"

it's going outside of the allowed area.  There is no way around that--it's

actually the limiting feature of the Lite license.

Use the mirror command to get parts from top to bottom (or vice-versa).  Go

through the tutorial, it's actually quite helpful in explaining some of the

    basics of EAGLE.

If you get a Standard or Professional version they have larger limits of

PCB area.  You can see a comparison of all the versions here
