Is there a way to convert back to Eagle 5 format?

Simply use one of your regular daily backups - ideally of the last day

before moving to 6.0.

You might try one of the export ULPs to generate a script which you can

use to import the design in 5.11 again. (See download section.)

Duh!  It is common for new versions of software to be able to read data

files from old versions but only write the new format.  Even if you weren't

somehow aware that Eagle 6 uses a totally new XML based format, it would

have been smart to archive a snapshot before upgrading.

In any case, just restore to your latest regular backup as Tilmann said.

You do make regular backups, right?

Yes and no.  AutoCAD and most Microsoft products have options to save as

earlier versions.  That being said, backups are essential.  I use

Crashplan http://www.crashplan.com/ to backup my files & libraries to

both my home computer and their cloud storage (paid version).  It is

real easy to use and so far has been very reliable.  You have access to

different versions of your files, not just the latest one.  It's similar

to more popular ones like Carbonite but is cheaper and more flexible.

Well, I got a similar issue. I'm sharing a design with someone else and he has just updated to 6.0 hence I can't read any of his files unless I upgrade too, which I'm not really motivated to do as 5.10 does all I require (and I would need to pay for the upgrade of course).

Saving to an older format *IS* pretty common since about '89, the fact that Eagle doesn't support this is somewhat mind boggling.

So, is there a way to convert 6.0 files to 5.10?

Yes, some software can do that.  But enough software doesn't, and then

there can always be bugs, that relying on that is just stupid.  People that

don't do backups deserve to have their data deleted, and it usually works

out that way eventually.

As I've already stated I don't have a backup...

I'm not used to programs that can't revert...

Eagle is a fantastic piece of software, I simply adore it, I've learned to use it in less than a week and it's so powerful.

But the lack of the possibility to save in the older format, at least in the early deployment stage of a major release, is a serious problem...IMHO

Try using the export-board and export-schematic ULPs that are up on the

website. There will probably be a couple of errors on import into V5 but

otherwise should import ok.
