I have a DIL socket and a programmable part that goes in the socket. I want the socket and the part on the schematic & BOM but only the socket on the PCB. How do I do that, gracefully?

That works quite nicely, thanx.

1) Make a library device that has a symbol for the programmable part and a
package for the socket.
2) Make a second device ( a symbolic device) for only the socket. It could
simply be text "In 20 pin socket" surrounded by a rectangle .This device
has no package.
Set the attributes as required for BOM generation for both devices.
Add to the schematic:
1) the programmable part. Which has all the pins which you connect to other
parts
2) the socket device.
On the board you see a socket with airwires to the correct pins.
The silk screen should show the socket outline and the name will be that of
your programmable part eg IC2
