Eagle on Linux display rendering problem

Hi,

I'm trying to install Eagle 5.1 on Ubuntu Linux 8.04. I have tried to

intall it using apt-get (from ubuntu repository) and by executing .run

file downloaded from Cadsoft. When I install / rul eagle, I get screen

like the one in the screen-shot (attached and url below)

http://cid-9fef434780b4a471.spaces.live.com/photos/cns!9FEF434780B4A471!138/

My laptop has ATI Rage Mobility 128 graphics and am running 1024x768

resolution.

What could possibly be wrong? All the other linux apps work fine.

Thanks,

Chetan Bhargava

Looks like it was the display depth problem. My default color depth was

24 bit, it worked when I changed to 16 bit.

Now the question is whether eagle supports 24 bit display on Linux?

    Thanks.

Yes, it does. In fact I strongly suspect Eagle cares not one jot about

colour depth - it leaves all that to the Qt library which in turn leaves

it to X. I have run Eagle on Gentoo Linux at 24-bit colour for years.

Looks like you have a problem with your Ubuntu X install, or just

    possibly with your hardware.

Thanks for the info Robert. Maybe my hardware is old; it is Dell

Latitude C600. My X configuration works on 24 bit as all the apps work

    except eagle.

BTW, my setup is gnome based so it does not use qt.

    Thanks,

That's irrelevant. Whether you use KDE or Gnome (or icewm or xfce or

qvwm or...) as your desktop does not affect whether a given application

uses Qt or GTK. A GTK app still uses GTK on KDE, just as a Qt app still

uses Qt on Gnome. Eagle is a Qt app.

Looks like only qt related package installed is libqthreads-12

    chetan@latitude:~$ dpkg -l |grep -i qt

    ii  libqthreads-12                             1.6.8-6ubuntu1

                     QuickThreads library for Guile

    Thanks

Or maybe eagle is using qt libraries from its own package and not from

    the OS.

In that case when qt delivers streams to X it does not interpret properly.

    Thanks
