Some command questions

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

How do I redraw my board frame to precise dimensions in the board editor?  Also, how do I move an object, like a hole to a precise location?  I read the Help for MOVE but don't understand the syntax.  For example, what do the asterisks and the underscores represent in "MOVE * * _ _"?  Sorry, but I am an Eagle newbie.

Hi silverfoxxx - I've moved your question to the CadSoft EAGLE forums so that it might have a greater pool of people to help answer your question image

Hope that was ok with you!

Ok, I figure out how to do both with the Information method as opposed to the command method,  But please tell me where to find an explanation of how to interpret the Help instructions for entering commands.

I thought that was where I was.  Tell me how do I get to the Eagle forum?   And is there an option to get an email notification when someone replys to your question?

I position things using the small window below the menus, next to the command line (to the left).  It gives the grid size, and the position of the mouse on the board.  I am careful to start all my boards with the lower left corner at 0,0 so it is easy to place things in relation to the "origin" of 0,0.  If you need more precision, then make the grid size smaller.  When moving a component, board boundry, or a mounting hole and I need to place it exactly at the right spot, I select it and watch this window to find to correct coordinates to place it.  It will always show the center (if part is centered... pay attention to where the "+" is that marks the part, they are not all centered).  If the part is not centered on the "+", note the original position, and then note the offset from center by moving the mouse to where you feel the physical center truly is.  Move the part to the new location, adding (or subtracting) the offset.  This always works for me.

I hope that makes sense.  It is easier than it sounds.  image

And it is more straight forward for me. I like to see what I am doing, so I rarely use the command line. In fact, almost never.

Oh, I discovered that it is much easier than that.  Simply click the i (information) icon in the tool bar and then click on whatever object you want to precisely position. In the dialog that pops up you can edit the x and y of its position, assuming that you know where you want it.  Hit enter and it moves to that position.   And yes, putting the bottom left corner of your frame at 0,0 helps a lot.
