Board window questions.

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

A couple of maybe "stupid" questions.

1)  In the board window.  Sometimes I get a brownish-green "X" usually over a via.   What does this mean?

2)  In board window after doing a DRC check.    I get a lot of "overlap" errors.   Can I safely assume these are OK if they are intentional (e.g. ground nets running into/over ground plane and heat sink copper areas)?

What is the best way to provide large GND areas for heat sinks?    Draw "rec" on the bottom layer?   How do ground planes get connected to the GND net?   Automatically if they touch/overlap and GND net trace?  They have to be defined explicity?

    1) Via can be scratched, do a ratsnest.

    2) Only if they are intentional, but you should then mark those as accepted.

    3) Use polygons and name them "gnd" if you want to connect them to that

gnd net. Same names in eagle means a connection even if a net continues

    on a different page.

    Hi Joern, Hi charlesH

may I add some more information to your answers?

    >> 1) In the board window. Sometimes I get a brownish-green "X" usually

    >> over a via. What does this mean?

Such a cross represents an airwire that goes from one layer into

another layer and the coordinates of start and end point of the airwire

are the same. For example an airwire from Top to Bottom layer.

If there is a via placed at this location, obviously the via has

not the name of the signal of the traces. (This could be the reason for

your overlap errors in DRC, you mentioned in the 3rd question).
