Can I install Eagle 6.2 on two PC's with 1 user lisense or not??

Hi,

I am interested in purchasing Eagle 6.2 Pro Schematic & Layout from Farnell in the UK. My question is can I install the software on both my desktop and laptop PC’s as I often use both for PCB design?

I've read a few previous posts about saving your key file and installation code but I've just come off the phone to Farnell tech support and was told it's not possible to install on two machines??

I'd be very grateful if somebody could please clarify this before I blow £1000 on something I can only use on one PC?

Also if I only purchase the schematic and layout modules, can I upgrade  to include the auto router at a later date? And could I upgrade from say Standard edition schematic & layout to Pro schematic & layout?

Cadsoft doesn't seem to make this information available anywhere (from what I can see?) and you need a serial number to view upgrade options which seems a bit stupid when I want to check my options before I buy...

Many thanks,

Paul…

And as I thought, both versions of Eagle worked perfectly yesterday, but today the situation has changed:

    - on my MacBookPro (notebook): eagle starts up as normal

    - on my iMac (desktop): I get the license window and have to lookup the license 'key'-file and the installation code.

    Hi Paul,

I contacted our developer and he has an idea on why you're experiencing

the behavior, here is his response:

    -

Are both machines not connected with each other (for example in a network) ?

I assume no. He says he uses some software called Chronosync to

    synchronize the EAGLE directories.

I think the installation directories are identical in both cases. In

that case there would be a problem.

The crucial part of licensing is the file EAGLE.key in $EAGLEDIR/bin.

The key file is unique for one machine.

If $EAGLEDIR is identical for both installations he uses EAGLE.key also

    for the other machine.

EAGLE detects that this does not fit together and wants another license

    file.

He could check that by working with a copied $EAGLEDIR. Start EAGLE from

    copied directory on the machine

where it didn't work and license it once more.

Then there a 2 versions of EAGLE.key, one in original $EAGLEDIR for

first machine, one in the copied

$EAGLEDIR for 2nd machine. This should work.

    -

Basically he's assuming that the computers are not on the same network

and since you mentioned the use of a third party synchronizing software

    that may be the culprit.

If both installations are synced to the same libraries, ulps, etc. then

there eagle.key files are also synced and as he noted above this creates

    the problem.

Could you try his suggested solution and see if that works for you?

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

Aha, there we could very well have a point!

Indeed some of my directories both my computers are synchronised automatically (when they are on the same network: when I am in my office). The full eagle-directory is synchronised automatically once a day to keep my libraries, ulps, etc... identical. Also the bin-directory is synchronised. Also the EAGLE.key-file will be copied tot te most recent version on both machines. This could be the cause of the problem.

I will exclude this file from synchronizing - this is possible in Chronosync. I will report on the results later (I'm almost leaving for vacation so it could take some time). But I have good hope that this will be solved.

I have already done one forced synchronization after which both versions still worked fine, so this looks good.

The computers are mostly on the same network, but both installations of eagle are pure stand-alone because I want to use Eagle on my notebook when I'm not at my office and without any connection.

Thanks for helping me out on this!

As promlised I will get back in a few weeks with (hopefully) de definitive outcome of the solution.

Hi, I promised to get back at this after my holiday.

Well, the problem is solved! Both Eagles can work at the same time: I do not have to enter my license key any longer, every time I switch machines.

    Thank you very much!

    Hi Paul,

Glad that it working as it should.

Let me know if there's anything else we can do for you.
