Can I install Eagle 6.2 on two PC's with 1 user lisense or not??

Cadsoft doesn't seem to make this information available anywhere (from what I can see?) and you need a serial number to view upgrade options which seems a bit stupid when I want to check my options before I buy...

 

You can upgrade at a later date to include the autorouter, however

you'll end up paying more than if you had just purchased the three

together(there's a built-in discount to getting all of the modules

together).

For example if you buy the pro with all three modules outright the cost is:

$1640.00

If you buy first the layout and schematic that will cost:

$1145

Adding the autorouter later on will cost:

$625

Yes, you can install eagle on two PC's. I'm the only user of eagle (as I'm a self-employed engineer), using it on my desktop (iMac) and on my notebook (MacbookPro) when I'm not in my office/lab.

Consider the fact that every time you switch computers, you have to start looking for the licence file and the installation code, taking up some minutes of your time. So, this is not user friendly if you ask me.

Keeping the libraries, user program files,... synchronized between computers is working with the help of a third-party-software (like Chronosync,...)

Now my question: is there a way (except buying two licences) not having to lookup the licence file and the installation code, every time you start eagle on the 'other' machine?

Hi Paul,

Once EAGLE is installed and licensed you shouldn't need the key file and

installation code again until you are going to update.

Am I understanding you correctly in saying that every time you go from

one computer to the other you have to relicense EAGLE?

you are understanding me correctly: everytime you start eagle on the other machine, you have to relicense EAGLE. This was so with version 5 and again so with version 6.

You don't have to relicense as long as you use eagle on one machine, but the first time thereafter that you want to use EAGLE on the other machine, the program has 'forgotten' the license information and you get the following choices: "cancel" - "Freemium" - "Run as Freeware" - "Use license file".

There are better ways to apply the "single user-multiple computers" license. I use other paid software that is protected by a license file or code that automatically inhibit the use of the program on a second computer while it is running already on one computer: for example: Apple's Aperture software, Circusponies Notebook,... Of course this will only work you are online or on the same network I think, but the EAGLE security must also work this way now: otherwise the program wouldn't know that it has been started up on another computer.

Hi Paul,

I think you're misunderstanding EAGLE's licensing system then. If you go

help-> EAGLE License it will always ask you for licensing info even if

EAGLE is licensed. The reason behind this is that there are occasions

when you want to run as freeware or something like that.

EAGLE doesn't make use of the internet to enforce licensing

restrictions. Once you've licensed it on a machine you don't have to

license it again unless you update/upgrade.

To see that this is the case on both of your computers go Help-> About

EAGLE in the EAGLE control panel.

Could you confirm that on both machines your license information shows up?

first thanks for replying to this item.

I will try to write down step by step, what 's happening when starting up eagle.

I have been working yesterday and today on Eagle on my iMac (desktop computer). Now I will start up Eagle on my MacBook Pro (notebook). On my iMac I have closed Eagle.

After starting up Eagle, the first thing I get is the license window:

Choosing "cancel" closes the program

Choosing "Freemium" gives me the opportunity to enter a Freemium code

Choosing "Run as Freeware", opens Eagle, but after choosing the license information, it mentions the the singel user freeware license for educational use only. But apparantly, at first sight, the program works, but in the title of the program window there is "Eagle 6.2.0. light" mentioned, so I expect some freeware limitations. After closing Eagle and restarting up, the license dialog isn't showing any longer, but Eagle is still in "light"-mode.

Choosing "Use license file", I'm asked to enter the license file and installation code.

Now you could think: the license file has never been installed on the MacBookPro (but it was). So now I have entered my license file and installation code, so now Eagle is showing in the title: "Eagle 6.2.0. Professional". Quiting and starting up gives no problem on my MacBookPro.

Also, on my desktop, I'm able to start up Eagle without any hassle about license file. So at this moment, I'm running Eagle on both computers. I'm sure tomorrow this will not be possible any longer. Now I will restart this desktop computer to see what happens afterwards and at te latest tomorrow I will keep you informed about the situation.

And as I thought, both versions of Eagle worked perfectly yesterday, but today the situation has changed:

- on my MacBookPro (notebook): eagle starts up as normal

- on my iMac (desktop): I get the license window and have to lookup the license 'key'-file and the installation code.

So, this prooves there is 'some' kind of exchange of information about the license between the computers or between the computer and a central administration: my iMac "knows" that the same license was used on my MacBookPro and therefor, the license on the iMac expired. Or there is some other mechanism having the same result. Which - in fact - can make sense in protecting the software against piracy, but I think there could be a better way nowadays.

Hi Paul,

If there is an exchange it's not promoted by EAGLE. I presume these

don't have any type of deep freeze software which restores the computer

to a defined state after a shutdown(very common in school computers).

In my limited experience with Macs I've noticed that they take care of a

lot of stuff for you. For example if you have EAGLE installed and you

then install a New version the MAC OS automatically removes the old

installation by default.

Is there any possibility something like that is going on here? I don't

know but I'm going to forward this to our developers.
