undeleting part names from the layout

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I've accidentally deleted a part name on the layout, like "R5", by right-click and then delete.  I was deleting the values (like "150k") which I didn't want to show up on the layout and got a name by mistake.  Is there a way to get the part name back on the layout?  If I right click on the part itself in the layout and then go to "name" the correct name shows up in the dialog box there, but does not display on the layout anymore.

Thanks!

Can't you simply hide the xValues layer for that?

Yes: UnSMASH the part by selecting the SMASH tool and Shift-Clicking the

part in question. Alternatively, uncheck the "Smashed" CheckBox within

    the INFO dialog.

Sorry about the delayed reply, and thank you for the replies so far!  Unfortunately though my problem is still there.

Rene - good to know about unsmash!  I didn't know that existed.  I tried "unsmash" from the pull down menu, tried it with the shift-smash method, and checked the properties box which does show smashed as unchecked now.  But still no part name showing up on the layout.  If I click on "name" on either the layout or schematic for the part it does correctly show "S3" (this is a switch) in the dialog.  But S3 still does not show up on the layout since I deleted it.

Joern - good to know about the F9 undo!  I didn't know about that.

    Thanks!

do you see any part names at all? If not so then perhaps you have the

    tName/bName layer(s) hidden?

    Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, all the other part names are showing up just fine.  On the PC board under this particular (top mounted) part are a number of surface mount resistors and all their names are showing up, like "R4", "R5", "R6", etc.  Next to this switch is a capacitor with its name, "C12", showing up.  I did just check the tname and bname layers and they are active.

Good thought, but the problem persists.

This problem is easy to recreate.  Here is how:

    1. Smash any part on the layout so that its name becomes detached and movable.

    2. Right click on the "handle" for the name of that part, the "+" that you would use to move the name around.  That will bring up a pop-up menu.

    3. In the pop-up menu click on "delete" and the part name will go away.

    4. Now how to get the name back?? That is my problem.  Immediately after hitting delete I can click on "undo" in the layout menu and it will bring the name back just fine. I've had to do that a few times.  But unfortunately I have these 3 parts where the names were deleted and I didn't discover it in time to use "undo".  Now I can't get the names to show anymore on the layout.  And as per one of the above postings, I have tried to use "unsmash" and that doesn't help.

Any help is appreciated!  For now I'm just using the text feature and making a text of the name "S2" on the tplace layer.

you don't mention triying to unsmash as Rene has suggested.
