i am trying to present a solenoid on the schematic but could not find a component from any of the libraries i have, any one know where i can find one? it does not have to match the specs as long i get the symbol as i can use jumper wires to get it in the board

    Hi,

You will probably have to make a choice here: If you don't want the

solenoid to be on the board, you can't really use a regular Eagle symbol

for it, because the package will appear on the board.

Probably the easiest thing to do here is just use wirepads to connect the

solenoid to (from wirepad.lbr, or make your own), and in the schematic

pick a non essential layer and draw the symbol for yourself (with wires,

circles, etc.) to represent it's function.

This item (off-board components) comes up regularly, but so far I haven't

seen a good solution, and probably won't until Cadsoft puts it on it's

    to-do list.

The second best solution so far is a ulp from Andreas Weidner (I believe,

do a search), where you can take a regular eagle device, and the ULP will

put the symbol on a non essential layer and remove the package from the

board. So if you find a device in an Eagle library and want to put it

    off-board, this will help.

thank you Richard, i will try the first proposal, however i will need to see how to find a non essential layer since i am using the 6.4.0 Light Edition. for the second option i need to do some researchas iam new to eagle package and do not know much about ULP!!!!????

    Hi Mohammed,

You can use layer '97 - info' or '98 - guide' in the schematic editor, or

you can define your own layer. See 'help layer' for that.

If everything goes well, you'll find the ULP attached. (explode.ulp). It

was indeed from Andreas Weidner. If there is no attachment (I use the

newsgroup, not Element14), you can download it from www.cadsoftusa.com,

download section. You have to 'group' the elements you want to turn to

graphics. just experiment with a test schematic to see how it works.

If you want to use your own layers for something go over 100!

True. Although it is mentioned in the 'help layer', who reads that? ...

If you expect to need the solenoid in the same or a very similar fashion

on another design in the future I suggest to make a library model for

it. Seems like a lot of work right now but you'll learn from that

exercise and you'll be thankful to yourself when the time comes where

    you need another solenoid.

If it's a one-time use, I sometimes draw it into the schematic with

wires, arcs, radiuses and so on. In that case I switch to the symbol

layer so that the netlister won't think it's unconnected nets.

thank you all for all those suggestions, for now i will be fine with the wire-pad solution, but sure it is will be a learning experiance for me to learn for a purpose
