mac os x issues

I'm running eagle 5.3.0 on Mac OS X 11.4 and having a few problems :

ctrl-right click : I have to use CMD-right click, even thought the

guidance says CTRL-right.

How does one pan under mac ?

No , you cannot use the middle-mouse button.  The middle mouse button

brings up app selection, and as far as I know this (extremely

annoying) "feature" of the mac cannot be disabled.  No you cannot use

ctrl-mouse, because that actually requires use of the cmd key, which

breaks group moves.  So I'm using scroll bars, and that's quite

annoying.

Crashing.  Well I just tried to reproduce this and I can't, but here

is what I doing when it did crash:

I had an (empyty) library open and went to the eagle menu entry.

That's all, just caused the menu to pulldown without selecting

anything, and eagle promptly crashed, and took the finder with it. I

had to relaunch finder.  I was able to do this twice in a row.  I

cannot reproduce it now.

Graphics are SLOW !  When a large cursor is enabled, the redraw of the

mouse cursor noticeably lags the pointer movement.  The large cursor

seems to make things noticeably worse, so I'm using a small cursor all

the time. Graphics are slower in general.  It's useable, but annoying.

CTRL-right-click is the correct behaviour. It's always ctrl-right-click

for the context menu on OSX. I could wish that the group-behaviour

wasn't ctrl-right-click by default for that reason, but that's a

    different story.

The middle button works just fine for me, panning as expected.

    The middle mouse button

brings up app selection, and as far as I know this (extremely

annoying) "feature" of the mac cannot be disabled.

There is no such 'feature' on the Mac that I'm aware of, and I'm an

engineering lead at Apple. I certainly don't know everything about the

Mac, but I know a fair amount...

    No you cannot use

ctrl-mouse, because that actually requires use of the cmd key, which

breaks group moves.  So I'm using scroll bars, and that's quite

    annoying.

Given that you have a non-existent feature (the apps bound to the

middle-mouse button) and the CMD and CTRL swapped, I suspect you have

an "input-manager" hack in place - these are officially discouraged by

Apple, but there are still several apps that install them. Check your

'System Preferences' for anything under the "Other" category.

Also look in {Macintosh HD}/System/Library/InputManagers and

$(HOME)/Library/InputManagers and see if there's anything there (if

    either of these directories exist).

It is possible to remap the CMD and CTRL keys, but only (as far as I

know) for all applications at once. See the 'Keyboard and mouse' system

preference panel, Keyboard tab, 'Modifier keys' button for how to put

them back, if that's your issue.

It's also possible you've installed an application that takes over some

of the OS behaviour (eg: QuickSilver, or any of the other app-launcher

applications). If that's the case, try disabling them (to confirm the

hypothesis) and then re-configure them to suit yourself.

Crashing.  Well I just tried to reproduce this and I can't, but here

is what I doing when it did crash:

I had an (empyty) library open and went to the eagle menu entry.

    cannot reproduce it now.

If you do have input managers in place, they are notorious for

causing crashes in unexpected places. I'm running Leopard, not Tiger

(I'm assuming you mean OSX 10.4 above) but so far I've found Eagle to

be exemplary in terms of stability.

Graphics are SLOW !  When a large cursor is enabled, the redraw of the

This I will agree with. Eagle 5.3 is far slower than the 4.x series.

Even things like autorouting seem to take a lot longer than before -

to the extent that I've been considering writing a standalone

autorouter rather than wait N hours for the thing to route the circuit

    over and over (and over)

    Simon.
