Eagle Library Problem

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

i'm trying to create a few specialized items in a new Library. i'm able to create the Symbol and the Package but they do not appear together and are apparently not linked. For example I created a CR123 3v Lithium battery holder. I created a symbol for a 3V battery and a package for the holder. When i try to use it in my project I can see it in the library list and it displays the package not the symbol. When I drop it in my project nothing appears in the schematic but if I switch to the board the item is there and can be used.

Similarly I created a special purpose 3V voltage regulator for Arduino projects. I created the package and the symbol and again they are not displayed whne i select the library item and in this case dropping it in the project results in no symbol or package in the schematic or the board.

Clearly I have a linkage problem but I'm dumbfounded what it is. i have attached the two library files in hope that someone can explain to me what I did, or didn't do, and how to prevent it in the future

Thanks

creating a custom library part is a three step process. you need to have a symbol and package before you can create the device.

your device does not link the two.

open the "device" in your library and add your symbol to it, then choose a package and link the pins.

I opened the device and can select the symbol or the package. But I do not understand what this means: "... and link the pins."

I guess i'm just dense but what function does this?

That is easy explained: You have no pins on your symbols.

And that means that in the device editor you can not connect the Symbol

    pins to the package pads.

Turn on layer pins when creating devices.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    I opened the Library and

    a) opened the symbol

    b) put pins on the symbol

    c) assigned names to the pins: "NEG" and "POS" as appropriate

    d) opened the package

    e) assigned names to the associated connectors on the package, "NEG" and "POS"

When I look at the device it now has both the symbol and the package in it os it looks like its OK

When I open the library and try to use the device I get an error "Device CR123-BATTERYHOLDER has unconnected pin (GND/NEG). From this I infer that naming the package pads NEG and POS is not sufficient and somehow I have to get "pins" on the package to assign the name so that it can match the symbol?

When I access the Package dialog I do not get the option for layer  "93 Pins" that would map to the symbol. The package consists of layer 17 Pads and 21 tPlace and there does not appear to be an option to turn on Layer 93 Pins.

Thanks, I figured it out. I wasn't using the "Connect" function correctly so my pins were not matched between the Symbol and the Package.

    So much to learn image
