HostID is hardware dependant only ?

kikoun
kikoun over 9 years ago

Hello,

As I said in the post 'New eagle licensing -> goodbye Eagle', I'm ready to purchase my V7 upgrade but only if I'm sure that the hostID is only link to the hardware and will not change if I install a new linux version. So my question is simple:

My computer run with linux, opensuse 13.1. In November, the opensuse 13.2 will be ready. Will the HOSTID change if I install this new OS on the same computer (usually I do not proceed with an simple update, I prefer to format "/" disk, and preserve only the /home disk).

    Hi,

Is anybody could confirm that HOSTID is only  hardware dependent , or if it's OS dependent ?

As far as I am aware yes it is hardware dependant and I belive it

can be spoofed.  MS do a hardware scan and assign a unique value

that represents all the checked components in a machine.  This

creates a key that should be unique to only that machine.

Any idea if that is the case for GNU/Linux versions too?  No MS hardware scans to assign a convenient unique value in Suse or Ubuntu!

Unfortunately, if I remember correctly, changing a network or video card

changes the ID for the way M$ calculates the ID and while these days, most

of the motherboards have the network interface on them, changing video

    cards is not that uncommon.

My question concern Linux. I run Opensuse, and I always install the last version of it (about once per year). That why I'm asking. I don't want to loose my Eagle license because I update my system.

On MS, I prefer to avoid to re-install the OS : Too long, too complicated to keep your preferences, and to expensive to buy a new MS OS each year ( there is no new windows each year....) !

On MS, If I had to re-install, is because the system became to dirty to work well...

By the way, On MS, I know that some hostID used a number of the hard disk, but this number change when you format it. And even if it didn't, that stupid because the hard drive is the most fragile part of the computer !

    Hi Guys,

    Geoff Riley prodded the keyboard

Any idea if that is the case for GNU/Linux versions too?  No MS

hardware scans to assign a convenient unique value in Suse or

    Ubuntu!

As far as I am aware Linux uses component ID's in order to discover

what hardware you have in order to select the correct driver for

the things it knows about.  For instance if you have some obscure

hardware, it likely doesn't work from the off !  This means that

you have to search and find the right driver.  But I must admit

Linux is getting very good at determining the right software to

    suit the hardware it finds.

Now whether it keeps a list of these ID's or generates a key value

for them, I don't know.  I do know that if you change a video card

it will complain and then you have to sort out the driver for the

    new one.

    Hi Guillaume,

I found out, the HostID is strictly hardware dependent. The OS doesn't

play into the calculation of the HostID

    Hi Guillaume,

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia

    I second.

Same hardware works with different OS:es.

Ok, I have tested it only Windows x32, x64, Debian Wheezy.

Code may differ, but it has nothing to do with the Operating System.

Yes exluding CPM, iRMX, HPUx, etc...

I am sure license DO NOT work with XenServer either WMWare, but the

multiple user license server may installed at them.

Have a look the license model

    http://www.linqpad.net/Purchase.aspx#Multi

Single license for three computers, license code checked via net, when

    activating.

Possibility to transfer any of those license to the new hardware twice

    per year.

Need no net connection when using software.

Thank You Joseph Albahari, because Your licensing model is just as good

as Your LINQPad. Used to use that everyday.

I am working with two laptops and a desktop,

Eagle license before 7, was suitable for hobbyist like me.

Now I have to buy two licenses, because I am fixing JenDuino schematics,

boards and software (At Home, At Play and At Cottage), before I can

    release it.

This comment is only for single user license, the license servers and

management is best for the big companies, who has replicated license

servers and have > 10 seats.

      - Asko.

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia

That a great news for me, and now I'm OK for renewing my license because this mean that I could update my linux os without trouble.

Thank you Jorge for your help.

If I understand what Asko wrote, It's also mean that on my laptop, on witch I have a double boot linux Suse/ XP 32, I will have the same hostID  for both OS ?

It's doesn't matter anyway if it doesn't, because I rarely use XP, but this will confirm that it really OS independent.
