OSX - Mavericks - objects not displayed while moving

ufanders
ufanders over 11 years ago

Hi guys,

I'm seeing a problem in EAGLE 6.60 (professional license) where any object I attempt to move (nets/parts/etc.) does not move as my cursor moves. This makes schematic capture very difficult. Sometimes I can temporarily fix it by switching to the board view then back to the schematic view. This is only temporary however.

Do you have a patch or a workaround for this?

    Hey Nelson,

this is a 'known bug' on OS X. A workaround is to switch to another application with CMD+TAB and then back to Eagle, again with CMD+TAB.

    Best regards,

    Lieven.

    Hi Lieven,

Thank you for the update. Is this problem solved in EAGLE v7.x?

    Hi Jorge,

I'm glad to hear this is being worked on because it's a blocking problem to my development and surely others'.

My license is for EAGLE 6.60 - will I receive a patch that will fix this problem in 6.60?

    Hi Anders,

Unfortunately, any improvement will be applied to V7. We generally don't

do any developement work on previous version of EAGLE.

Ha, It's a serious question actually.

If I paid several hundred dollars for an upgrade to a system that I can't use then I'll find an alternative program to work with. I don't mind not having the latest features, but what I pay for must operate as described when I buy it.

I'll give you guys a call soon and we can talk about the available options.

    I agree with this sentiment.

Cadsoft has a habit of stopping support for the current version when a

new version is released and before the new version is any good. A good

proportion of other vendors support the current version (twilight) for a

period that is stated up front or until the new version is stable.

There are issues with v6 that go beyond what society and the software

industry accepts as bugs and gets to the point of not delivering

advertised functionality. Functionality described in the documentation.

I'm  surprised there was not a Class action initiated, particularly in

the early months of v6? It could happen now with the bungled release of

v7 with the hierarchical functionality only delivering half of the

    normal expectation.

When v6 was released it was so obviously premature and bug riddled that

I forecast it would be 6.5 before it was stable. That turned out to be

correct. During this time bugs were still being logged for v5. A few

were fixed then but the cutoff came well before v6 was any good. From

the number of issues people were reporting I even posted that I was not

even going to bother reviewing it and reporting issues I found. Why

waste my time if Cadsoft did not invest time in to create an even half

quality product before releasing it. Then Jorge posted back saying that

I should so that others would benefit. There it was again, Cadsoft

leaving it up to the customers to do the testing for them.

Really, I feel sad for those who have outlaid money for v7. I hope it

works well for you in the end.

    Warren

    Hi Anders,

We can't anticipate changes that Apple, Windows or a particular linux

distro will make to their systems after the lifespan of a given release.

From the reports we received not all Mavericks users are experiencing

this, so it may not be an EAGLE issue, but rather one of settings and

    configurations on a particular machine.

Additionally, if it was a major catastrophic bug that impeded the

functionality of V6 we would go back and fix it. It's been done before

as Warren mentions, though maybe not to the extent some users would

like. I don't believe this constitutes a major, catastrophic bug since

there is a simple workaround as mentioned earlier in the thread.

With all that said, I'll bring this up to management and see what can be

    done.

    Hi Jorge,

I appreciate you taking this situation to heart, thank you. Certainly if an OS manufacturer does something strange it's out of Cadsoft's control.

Does Cadsoft have a QA team? For the price of a part-time employee I imagine it would provide an enormously positive return on investment for Cadsoft.

Please let us know what management says about this situation. I've always advocated for EAGLE but now that I exclusively use OSX for development, this current bug that constantly interrupts my workflow would be fatal for my advocacy. I have rather strong influence in San Francisco where a lot of the new (especially wearable) technologies are being created and I'd love to continue pointing people to a CAD platform that's more prevalent than purely open-source offerings.

We don't have a dedicated QA team, with EAGLE's current codebase and

complexity we would need a lot more than a part-time employee to test

EAGLE across multiple platforms configurations and scenarios. All of the

technical staff is involved in testing EAGLE and covering as much ground

as we can but it's a lot.

    Hello again Jorge and Cadsoft,

I just received a promotional email about EAGLE 7.20 and looked through the release notes, but I did not see any mention of the OSX bug that requires me to switch windows every time I move or place a symbol. Can you please update us on the work that is bring done to solve this? I'm trying to use this tool at Nest (maker of the famous thermostat) but this bug makes my work very frustrating.

    Thanks!

    Hi Anders,

V7.3 is the one that will be addressing these issues. This one will be

    out in early 2015.

V7.2 is mostly a bug fix release with some small improvements to the

hierarchy and a new ULP object.

I know it's not you, but does Cadsoft/Element14 really expect paying

customers to wait this long for a critical bug that makes their

software unusable on a supported platform?

A point release (7.2.1) released very quickly to address a specific

critical usability bug (same with 6.6.1 to address OSX Yosemite

zooming) would go a hell of a long way to demonstrate

    Cadsoft/Element14's appreciation to its customers.

This is all very, very frustrating for Eagle's loyal customers.

    -A.

    Hi Anders,

Pleasure to talk to you again. It has been corrected. If you purchased

EAGLE after April 15, 2014 then you are entitled to the V7 upgrade for

free. Otherwise there would be an upgrade fee associated with bringing

    your license up to date.

    Hi Jorge,

My invoice date for EAGLE 6.0 is dated 10/05/2012. By your criteria I will have to pay for an upgrade to fix the drawing bug.

However, this bug was present within the entire 6.x release whereas Cadsoft claimed the program worked just as well across all supported platforms. But, it does not.

I paid for a license when I bought EAGLE 4.x, then paid again for 6.x. Asking me to pay for the dissolution of an egregious bug is very unprofessional. I don't care about 3D model exports, I don't care about native polygonal footprint pads or any of that - but I do care about working without constant interruption.

I'm investigating Altium CircuitMaker to see if I can migrate to that platform and leave EAGLE behind.
