holes not in Excellon drill file

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hi all,

I attempted to send a manufacturer a drill file in Excellon format, but they informed me that several 0.6" holes I wanted drilled were not in the Excellon drill file.  I browsed through the file and it appears that they are not present.

I checked one of the holes and it is in the "holes" layer as a circle.  In one of the forums it is suggested that a circle in the holes layer is not correct.  http://www.element14.com/community/message/57758/l/conversion-to-excellon-problem#57758

Is there some magic to tell Eagle to place these holes in the Excellon drill file?

Thanks,

Jeremy

The holes layer should not contain circles. It should contain holes.

Only holes in the holes and drills layers will be included in the

Excellon file. Note that pads and vias automatically create holes in the

drills layer, whereas mounting holes for connectors are explicitly drawn

as holes in the holes layer by the library package.

If you have board mounting holes then you should draw them as a hole in

the holes layer. It's common to also draw a circle in the dimension

layer, and quite possibly a larger circle in the restrict and/or keepout

layers. To this end it may be worth creating a mounting hole library

part - or use one of the ones in the holes library.

Sounds good.  Out of curiosity, what if you want to do a custom cutout?  Can this be done added in the drill file?  Sorry if this is a novice question.

    As rob said.

Also, the holes layer does not display a circle but the symbol that relates

to the diameter of the hole. Have a practice, display only the Hole layer

and proceed to place holes of different diameters and see the symbol

    change.

Next turn on the Dimension layer 20. and you will see the hole outline

drawn. This depiction of the hole outline is used to keep other objects

like polygon flood fills back from the hole as defined in the DRC

    settings.

From the board you can go Options > Set... > Drill and manage the drill

menu. Also there you can click on 'Set' to assign symbols to all the sizes

    used on your board.

Custom shapes would not be in the drill file but rather in the milling

layer. However, check with your board house because not all of them will

handle milling on their low cost service. The point is that the holes

layer, like the drill layer, defines things done with drills, which

means only circular holes. Milling involves a different tool that has

much better lateral stress handling and a completely different cutter.
