How do you make large holes in pcb layout?

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

HI gang,

this would seem to me to be a simple matter, but once again I' m baffled.

The project. I am working one requires  a hole in the pcb that is .625 In diameter.

eagle won't let me do that

so question is simple.

how do you make a .625 hole in the pcb layout?

thanks everyone.

I'd guess it actually depends on your board house. A 5/8" hole in

something as thin as PCB is unlikely to be drilled. It's probably a

milling or routing job, so approach it however your board house want

    such jobs done.

My guess would be that you should draw a 5/8" diameter circle in the

    dimension and/or milling layer.

I recently have ordered some boards that contain a hole with a diameter of 15 mm. I just created a hole in Eagle board editor.

Eagle automatically creates the circle in the dimension layer. The boards arrived fine. The board house was Eurocircuits.

I don't know what tool they used, the important thing is that they know how to do it.

I expect other boardhouses also have no problems with this approach.

    Kind Regards,

    Joop

    Hi

In my experience, usually boardhouse manage big drill hole, without any trouble. They automatically use the best way (drilling or milling) according to their own process.

That why i use the Milling layer approach for holes with a non-circle geometry (oblong etc...) and i simply use the Eagle hole tool for circle holes (big or small).

    Guillaume.
