No beep on linux (KDE) environement

I have a little trouble with the beep. Eagle doesn't play any beep (neither when displaying an error message, neither when I end a route).echo -e '\a'

I already check the 'beep' option (option, settings, beep), and it's working fine on windows PC.but on my linux (KDE) PC, no way to produce any sound.

The sound work on that PC, (echo -e '\a' in a console produce a nice dong !, and other application manage to produce sounds.

Is somebody have an idea ?

If you actually have a speaker in your PC (many modern desktops and laptops don't) make sure the pcspkr module is loaded, and confirm in KDE that System Settings->Application and System Notifications- System Bell has the 'Use system bell instead of system notification' box checked. If you don't have a speaker, good luck. I haven't figured out how to get a beep from Eagle yet either without a built-in speaker (my box doesn't have one). Without a speaker, you have to use system notifications, which basically means KDE plays a sound file when it gets a notification event. For example, to get your echo -e '\a' example to work in konsole, you have to have the box I mentioned earlier unchecked. Then, in the 'Manage Notifications' tab, use the 'Event source' drop down box to select 'Konsole'. Select the 'Bell in Visible Session' line, check the 'Play a sound' box, and select one of the available sound files. Then click 'Apply'. Echoing the bell character, as your example does, in the konsole window will now play that sound file. However, I haven't figured out how to get KDE to recognize a beep from Eagle using system notifications. Eagle is not one of the apps recognized as a KDE 'Event source'. (Presumably you have to do something KDE-ish in the source code to make that happen?) As a Qt app, perhaps Eagle is using QApplication::beep() to make the beep sound. When I looked at that in past, it appeared that Qt is either sending an ASCII 7 (\a) to stdout or calling XBell if xlib is linked in. In any case, I have no idea if that's actually what Eagle is calling to generate the bell, or what magic incantation KDE needs to recognize it as a notification and play the appropriate tune. Bob
