Import Eagle schematic into Orcad or MicroCad?

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 16 years ago

Hello,

Is there a method to take Eagle schematics and import them into MicroCad

(Winqcad) or if that doesn't work Orcad? Otherwise the engineer at the

other end will have to draw them all again, like usual. I was surprised

to find out that his MicroCad supposedly can import and export Orcad

schematics.

It's just about schematics, not layout.

    Nope image

It just might be impossible to do this kind of conversion. A while ago

there was a discussion about the fact that most CAD companies are making

a big secret out of their file formats. Vendor lock-in and all that. To

my surprise the CAD system one of my clients uses isn't related to

Cadence yet they claim it can import/export Orcad libraries and

schematics. If that really works that's a huge advantage, at least here

in the US where Orcad nearly owns the market:

    Hello Joerg,

I think you already know this, but you can use my company's tools to

export a netlist.  It's not a schematic export by any means but it allows

for a third-party layout tool to be used.  The netlist along with a PDF of

the schematic is pretty good, though not perfect.

And it's not impossible, there's just not much reason for anyone in the

EAGLE community to create a tool that helps people get out into another CAD

    tool.

Now there are some tools coming that will help get into EAGLE.  I'll drop

some hints without anything specific, but in a month or two there should be

a way to get from a major CAD tool that recently went obsolete into EAGLE.

    Stay tuned...

    Cheers,

    James.

Yes, a netlist is an option but not really in cases like this where

several guys thousands of miles apart must collaborate and end up with

    one common schematic.

And it's not impossible, there's just not much reason for anyone in the

EAGLE community to create a tool that helps people get out into another CAD

    tool.

There is a huge reason: In the US Orcad is pretty much the market

leader, most of my clients use it. It would be a serious business upside

for Eagle if you could give them an Orcad schematic file that they can

simply "copy and paste" into their design. Not being Orcad-compatible

has been a problem for me on many occasions, to the point where I am

thinking of going back. A netlist isn't cutting it for this job, you can

really only use that when giving a finalized design to the layouter.

This particular client uses MicroCad, if that's really Orcad compatible

via its conversion routines I might consider eloping image

But I really don't want to because Eagle is a great tool. After they put

    a hierarchy in, that is.

I currently consult for a company that uses Orcad Capture. The use of

hierarchical designs is critical for their business.

I've been looking for an alternative to Orcad for customers that don't

require it, but not having hierarchical capability is a deal breaker, for

    me.

As soon as Eagle adds hierarchy is when I buy into it.

Absolutamente! At least Cadsoft has now said it's on the list. I wish

they'd see the real important of it. I have here, right now, the

umpteenth schematic from a client where they didn't do a hierarchy.

Consequently very hard to read, it costs them hard Dollars because I

must bill the extra time it take to sketch out the non-existing top

    layer sheet.

I've been looking for an alternative to Orcad for customers that don't

Same here. When I have some time I'll check out this MicroCad software.

A bit strange is that the Yahoo forum that Winqcad points to has very

    little traffic.

As soon as Eagle adds hierarchy is when I buy into it.

Same here. I will not buy an upgrade to V5 until that's done. Others

whom I've shown Eagle have given it thumbs down because it lacks

hierarchy. But there is always hope image
