Creating / viewing 3D models for components?

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

I am just starting to learn Eagle and would like to know more about the 3D modelling features - I can't seem to find much in the manual and tutorials. Do all the component libraries contain 3D models of the components? If so, how can I view them? How do I make my own 3d model for a component? Can I export to Solidworks with the standard Eagle software, or do I need the IDF to 3D option?

Any help appreciated.

    Hi,

Eagle is not a 3D software, and there is no 3D model in Eagle libraries. But there are several ways to create a 3D model of your board from your Eagle design.

Personally I use the 3D software named Freecad (see http://freecadweb.org/ ) for all my 3D modeling needs. And for automatically create a 3D model of an Eagle board, I use the Freecad add on module named 'Freecad-PCB' ( see http://sourceforge.net/projects/eaglepcb2freecad/' ). Some 3D models are available on the on the download page of the Freecad-pcb site, but since it's support IGES or STEP models, it easy to get others on the net, or to build yours.

These softwares are certainly not the best ones but are free, work very fine, event for complex board, and are in permanent evolution. And it easy to use : once it's configured, you Click on button in eagle and it's start to build your board. There is also a way to create an Eagle board from the 3D software.

But as I said, there are other software to do that....

    Guillaume.
