Layer Abuse -  how bad is this?

mrmarple
mrmarple over 9 years ago

Just made a component, an 8 way connector with 16 (8 pairs of) pins, Phoenix 1875483.

Only 8 pins in the device but 16 pads in the package, there's no way to connect 2 pads to 1 pin.

My solution is to connect pins 1 to 8 to pads 1 to 8, join pairs of pads in the pad layer and ignore

unconnected pins 9 to 16.

(I could have 16 schematic pins and join them there but that's seems a bit untidy)

I routed the board, a mix of hand and auto, a DRC  showed no problems.

Running a DRC on the board with just my manual routing gives 8 layer abuse errors

pointing to my 8 pad layer connections.

How do I fix this or do I not worry about it and just approve them?

    Wrong!

When you connect the pins to pads in the 'Device Editor > Connect' you use

the connect button to connect  the pin to a pad but then use the 'Append'

button to connect a second pad to the pin.

In that way you can have one pin connected to many pads. After that, set

whether one or both of those pads need to be connected on the board,by

clicking the little icon between the pin and Pad columns in the connect

window. A hover shows 'all' or 'any'.

    OK. Done.

    No DRC errors now.

    Thanks.
