Generic TSSOP14 package.

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

HI there,

Although I've been in Electronic design and prototyping for many years, I'm new to Eagle.

I'm trying to generate a circuit using some Maxim IC's that are not in your parts list (very extensive I have to say).

The main problem I'm having is that there is a Reference Package item for a TSSOP14 in the board editor but I can't find one in the schematic editor.

Is there such a package in the schematic editor?

If so, where?

Also, if I place a TSSOP14 package in the board editor, the Grid Snap function will NOT allow me to place tracks or signal paths to the pins.

Is there a way to switch OFF Grid Snap? I CAN'T FIND THIS IN THE HELP MENU.

I look forward to any reply.

for a TSSOP14 in the board editor but I can't find one in the schematic

No, there won't be, because TSSOP14 is a package, not a symbol.

This should be familiar to you in principle, as you've been "in

Electronic design for many years", but the terminology Eagle uses may

not be. When you design your circuit, you start with a schematic in

which all components are represented by "symbols", which probably don't

look anything like the physical component but represent its function.

Then, having completed the schematic, you design a board that implements

it. At this point you need to decide on "packages" for the components -

are you using through hole or SMD, wide SO or TSSOP, etc. Depending on

the component, this might also affect which "pins" (schematic symbol,

functional connections) appear on which "pads" (physical connections on

the package). This mapping is maintained, for each "device", in its

library entry. Devices consist of one or more schematic symbols (all

present in an instance of the device, but may not all be the same -

think 7400 quad NAND gate vs. a relay) coupled to one or more board

packages (only one of which is chosen).

Is there such a package in the schematic editor?

No, see above. You need to create a device, in a library of your own, to

represent the Maxim IC in question, with both schematic symbol and

    TSSOP14 (and possibly other) package(s).

    If so, where?

Also, if I place a TSSOP14 package in the board editor, the Grid Snap

function will NOT allow me to place tracks or signal paths to the pins.

You can start and end routed tracks on pads that are off-grid, if the

pads belong to a package that belongs to a device that appears on the

schematic, with a net connected to the corresponding pin.

Is there a way to switch OFF Grid Snap? I CAN'T FIND THIS IN THE HELP

    MENU.

You can set the grid to anything you want, or you can set the "alternate

grid" to very fine and place with the ALT key down.
