Online searchable Eagle c omponent library?

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 9 years ago

Hi,

Is there good online library for individual Eagle components?

I'm looking for somewhere where I can search for a component before I have

to sign up and download an entire library.

What happens at the moment is that I'll find a site that claims to have an

eagle component library, but it requires me to sign up and register first,

only once I've downloaded and installed the library do I discover that

either the component I'm after isn't in the library, or (more often than

not) it's just a copy of the standard Eagle library that comes with the

product.

No.  All libraries made by others suck, and of course don't follow your

conventions for what gets put on the silkscreen, what the part should look

like in the schematic, how information is stored for BOM generation, size

of tDocu and other text for making the board drawing, line widths, etc.

Plenty of people do make their libraries available for others to use, but

vetting them properly is usually more work than just sitting down and

making your own your way.  Except maybe for some hobbyists, it's just not

    worth it.

The libraries that come with Eagle are included in this.  They are no

better, often worse, than what you find out there made by professional

users.  But in any case, making your own is a better idea anyway.

Yeah, probably, but having an example component you can start from is a lot

easier than having to start from scratch.

I do write most of my own components, but I know I am probably repeating

work that a hundred people have already done. One of the things I was

looking for was a library that I can search through before downloading and

installing it. I have found myself signing up to various websites to get

hold of a library that I eventually discover doesn't have what you want in

    it!

I have found myself selecting components based on the availability of eagle

libraries, I needed a trimmer pot recently, RS and farnell had 100s of

suitable examples, but only a couple already had eagle libraries, guess

    which I chose!

The point is, you've probably spent more time searching for libraries provided by others than just doing them yourselves and in the example you gave of trimmer pots, well they'll probably take no more than a couple of minutes to create yourself for any part, so selecting the part to use based solely on available libraries which you will then have to spend time checking is not a benefit.

The more you create your own parts the easier it gets, and in my experience I can create from scratch or adapt something I have previously created in less time than it takes to find, check, and adapt something created by somebody else. It really isn't a time saver in the long run to spend time searching for libraries, especially as the quality of available libraries so variable, ranging from mostly terrible to occasionally vaguely acceptable with some rework.

    Best Regards,

    Rachael

You're doing most on your own. But why are you unable to drop three pads

for a trimpot in the package editor then? What work are you talking about?

Selecting parts in favor of existing libraries is more work than just

looking for what is really needed and then creating your own device in

    the library (if necessary).

Yes - that the whole point of my post! thats why I was asking for a good

    online searchable database for components.

Even if there were such a database, do you envisage it would be a database of components provided by one company to a predefined standard? Or a database of assorted parts created by random individuals around the world to whatever standards they choose? Could you guarantee the parts you downloaded were all 100% correct?

I certainly wouldn't shell out potentially thousands of pounds for a prototype build using EAGLE components I downloaded from the internet. The amount of time taken to a) check and b) make alterations (even if it's just to make the standards consistent) is pretty much always more than if you just do it yourself in the first place.

Unless there is a professional company making high quality libraries to a standard, which you then pay for and they will provide a guarantee and a warranty in the event of error, it's just not worth it for anybody other than the occasional hobbyist who doesn't care about anything other than throwing something together as quickly as possible and hacking around any resulting errors.

    Best Regards,

    Rachael

    Hi Lima,

Rachael and the other are correct. You are better of making your own

parts always. However the closest thing I can offer to a database is

    schematicpal.com

However it's made by a bunch of people on the internet and like others

have mentioned the quality varies greatly.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia
