Unable to name a polygo n

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 9 years ago

I've created a polygon in the board window and the manual says I should be

able to name it by activating NAME and clicking on the polygon's border.

When I do, however, nothing happens, though I'm able to click on pins and

name them.  What am I doing wrong?

I'm running Eagle 4.16 on Win7 x64.  Thanks.

    Hi Karl

I can only guess that you are trying to click the edge of a polygon that

is the filled/calculated polygon that occurred after a ratsnest.

You need to click in the region of the polygon outline that was

    initially drawn.

You could close the board and reopen it as it will then show in outline

form making it easier to select the edge.

I tried it using  Eagle 4.16 on Win7 x64. and it works fine.

Thanks, Warren.  The polygon I created is part of a device (a big pad for

the back of a regulator I need to connect to ground), so I created it in

the package designer and tried naming it there with no luck.  I'm also

unable to name it when I add it to a board.  If I reload it into the

package designer, or reload the board, the polygon is solid.

I am almost sure that polygons that connect to copper correctly was a

feature added several versions beyond 4.x.

With 4.xx you have to draw the copper polygons on the board after you

place the part. The solder stops can go in the device's package.

Aah, I see.  That seems to work.  I guess I can use the solder stop mask as

a guide to trace the polygon in copper when I place the part on the board.

Just have to make sure to move the polygon along with the part if I move

things around (no way to group them I assume).

I notice it let's me join the polygon to the GND net when I give it that

name, but it doesn't create an air wire.  Am I just supposed to draw a

trace from ground to the polygon to connect it?

    Thanks.

In 4.xx you can't hide air wires so if you do a ratsnest and don't see

any unrouted nets you are connected. I think the polygon orphan mode

    needs to be off.

In most cases ir you are using the polygon as a heatsink you make it

much bigger and it then would intersect other ground pins and traces.
