Rectangular hole in pad

I need to make a package for at micro-usb connector. The connector has

short tabs going into the PCB.

The attachment shows the tabs, in the red circles.

Is it possible to make pad holes that are not round?

I know, the easy solution is to make the pad hole diameter big enough for

the width of the tabs, but I would like to learn the right way.

This is one of the FAQs seen here. Unfortunately this is not straight

forward (as of version 7.x), but you can:

1- Draw a wire on the milling layer for those slotted holes. Ask upfront

if your manufacture has milling tools of the diameter needed.

2-Make sure the copper is filled around the milling on all used layers.

Also take care of manually drawing t/bCream, t/bStop and/or other used

layers. Check out "arbitrary pads shapes" chapter in the manual.

3-Make sure to document the use of the milling layer and that the

manufacturer understands how to use it. Tell them explicitly to make

plated holes here. If you also have milled holes that should not get

plated, I recommend creating a user layer for the plated ones.

This will cause some DRC errors and you need to understand which ones to

    accept and not.

    Hi

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't have version 7. I 'only'

have version 6, which is still a great version.

I finally solved the problem, just using 3 overlapping drill pad holes.

That creates an approximating rectangular hole.

I guess you know any manufacturer will say no to this. They can't do it.

It would break their drillbits. If you just want it for your own

handmade layout, where you can hack it clean, its ok.
