Polygons not filling

autodeskguest

I'm using Eagle 4.16 on Win7 x64.  I've created a number of polygons and

tried to expand them by adding additional polygons.  Even though I give

these additional polygons the same names as the ones they're expanding,

they don't fill when I run Ratsnest (see the two

http://i.imgur.com/Hu5XL0m.jpg, lower left of Q1 and C9).  What am I doing

wrong?

Also, how does the solder mask interact with polygons?  Some areas of them

I want covered, but others I want to be bare copper.  How do I specify what

I want?

Thanks?

I meant, "Thanks." not, "Thanks?"  It's a typo that looks kind of snarky.

Unless you have the "Orphans" setting on, a named polygon will only fill

areas where it's got a connection to the net. Other polygon fills don't

constitute a connection here, only real tracks or pads. In the case of

your two small polygons, there is no such connection anywhere in the

    polygon, so they don't fill.

By the way, what is the reason for creating these two extra polygons,

when you could surely achieve the same by adding corners to the existing

    ones?

Also, how does the solder mask interact with polygons?  Some areas of them

I want covered, but others I want to be bare copper.  How do I specify what

    I want?

The solder mask has its own layers - tStop, bStop - which are "in

negative", i.e. anything you draw in those layers removes solder mask.

Pads and (some) vias automatically create an appropriate object in the

stop layer. Polygons don't, but if you want to expose a bit of the

copper all you need to do is draw a suitable shape in the tStop layer.

Thanks, Rob. I thought naming a polygon the same as an existing net

established the connection.  That's how it worked for the others in the

image.  How else can a connection be established?

I realize I can modify the existing polygons, but I thought creating new

ones would be easier. When that didn't work I was curious why?

Drop a via somewhere within the orphaned polygon, then change its name

    to that of the polygon.
