DXF import to eagle 7

Oppie
Oppie over 8 years ago

Trying to import a simple board for which I have a DXF file into eagle 7.

Tried Jorge's "import-dxf.ulp" (came with eagle7 ulp's) which generated only

a five line script and stopped. Don't know where I'm going wrong. The dxf

file opens fine with Draftsight.

I used to use Eagle Power Tools which had a dxf import that worked

splendidly. It's just not supported in eagle7.

The board is simple enough just to redraw but looking to the future, I would

like to get a working process.

Thank you - Oppie

    Hi

You have some work to do.

As I understand it, no ULP has ever worked with all dxf files.

Historically, splines were the object that was not handled

You need to determine which dxf entities are not supported by the ULP

and then determine if your dxf file is free of those entities.

From a quick look in the ULP, it appears to support the following entities.

    LINE,

    ARC,

    CIRCLE,

    POLYLINE,

    VERTEX,

    LWPOLYLINE

So if you have others you can expect the ULP to ignore them or grind to

    a halt.

Post your dxf here. Someone may be kind enough to inspect it. Going

forward you will need to understand the dxf formatting so you match the

    file to an appropriate tool.

DXF is attached. What a pain, since Eagle Power tools (for V5) imported DXFs

    perfectly.

    Hi Oppie,

I just looked at your DXF and it's in AutoCAD binary DXF format which I suspect is the problem. Can you export from AutoCAD in an ASCII DXF format?

    Best Regards,

    Rachael

DOH!  Yes, I thought I had ASCII but you were correct. This time I saved in

    autocad R12 ASCII format.

With your latest ASCII DXF file, using EAGLE 7.6.0 if I go File -> Import -> DXF... then select your file it does seem to import it although not all of it. Looking at it in eDrawings viewer there seems to be an entire document with sheet borders etc but this seems to just import the board part plus a few other bits in odd places.

The scaling isn't right by default so you'll need to choose an appropriate scaling factor when you load it in.

Yes, that was it! Re-tried Faulk Stricker's Eagle PCB Power tools DXF to Scr

converter and got a useable output. The script opened ok in Eagle7. Just

    cleaning it up now.

Many thanks for the important pointer.

Ignore this last comment, just set the units to imperial and it's fine.
