Net names suddenly appear ing on pads in ver 7.7

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 9 years ago

I just started the first layout since upgrading from version 7.6 to 7.7.

Now the net names appear on pads when previously they didn't.  See attached

screen shot snippet.

Needless to say, this is rather annoying.  I didn't ask for anything like

this when the new version was installed.  It just did it.  Now I have to

waste time while trying to do a board to figure out how to deal with this.

Argh!

Yo Cadsoft, STOP MAKING GRATUITOUS CHANGES SO THAT NEW VERSIONS DON'T WORK

LIKE THE PREVIOUS ONE.  It's good to introduce new features, but never

impose them on people without asking.  If you want new users to see a new

feature by default, make sure to have a mechanism that turns it off, and

then do so when upgrading from a previous version that doesn't include that

feature.

I can't rely on Eagle as a tool if new versions change my workflow and pop

new things in my face without my permission!

I might possibly use this new feature in some cases, but that should be for

me to decide when I'm ready, not when I need to get a board out.  In this

case, this feature doesn't tell me anything I can't get with Alt-V,N

quickly, but is in my face all the time when I don't care.  In the screen

shot example, it's cluttering up the component designators in the tDocu

layer.  I looked for some obvious new layer being displayed, but nothing

jumped out.

How do I turn off this feature to get back to the way it worked previously?

    Olin,

you don't have to shout around here......

I assume you know the settings in Options/Set. There you also find the

    new setting for

    Display Pad names

    Display Via Length

    and now new

    Display signal names

Here you can switchit on or off as you like.

I can agree that the signal names on the pads are at times very

disturbing. But signal names on wires are VERY useful. I'd like to

switch off the names on pads, at least until it done in a better fashion

(*), but afaics, there is no switch to turn off signal names on pads only.

(*) see how horrible it becomes in the example posted in eagle.betatest

with topic "Beta 7.6.3+:Showing signal names on pads"

I want you to understand how frustrating it is when Eagle suddenly does

something different from before.  Don't underestimate how this pisses off

    existing users.

    Quote:

That works, but that's just the clickety-click one-off way of fixing this.

I want to update my eagle.scr file to document this, and so I don't have to

do this separately on every machine I run Eagle on.

I looked at HELP SET, but couldn't find this.  It's a long help page, and

without reading every word, I didn't see it.  A find on "signal names"

didn't bring up anything in the SET command page.  I also just discovered

that you can't use regular find tools on the text in help pages.  Then I

thought I'd print the help page to a PDF and search it that way, but there

seems to be no way to print from the help viewer.  I had to copy the SET

help page, then paste it into a text editor, to finally find

    Option.SignalNames.

The help system could be more useful.  A set of PDF or HTML files would

have more utility than help pages held captive in a help viewer with

    limited features.

Anyway, for others, the way to turn this off is to with the command:

    set Option.SignalNames 0
