Conversion to Excellon problem.

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Robert,

Thank you very much for the correct answer to my previous question "Text window too small etc"on july 20.

I set the text on Vector and it succeeds indeed. I also placed the window in layer 41 tRestrict. However the machine not mills the copper around the text. He engraves only the rectangle around the text. But this will be a machine related problem I think?

Now I ran on against a new problem.

My CNC machine (Collinbus PCBbox of the firm Belgium) can not  process the Excellon file build by the Cam function in Eagle.

I got the following info from the engineer of Colinbus

1 There is too little information in the header.

CNCsoftware displayed the following warning : Warning: "Filename. drd is not Format2 file. Format parameters and/or tool sizes might need adjustment for correct import. "

2 The Filename.DRD fileheader does not give the right information the drills are expressed in mm while this should be in Inches (see header M72 indicates inch sizes). This will cause the drill holes unlikely great.

I got this message from my supplier of the CNCmachine

Look at the header (which is by the way  incomplete) and the tool list:

%

M48

  1. M72    ß-------------------- this command informs that the file is inch

T01C0.6096

  1. T02C0.8000      ß----      but tool diameters are defined in millimeters.

T03C0.8128

T04C0.9000 When M72 command is used then these diameters should be expressed

T05C0.9906 in inch!

T06C1.0000

T07C1.0160

T08C1.2192

T09C2.0000

T10C2.5000

T11C3.2000

T12C3.2512

T13C3.3020

%

T01

  1. X14099Y11281                    ß---- coordinates are in inches

X17099Y13681

X16499Y15681

User should set following Format parameters in the Import parameter dialog:

Unit:  Inches

Omitted Zeros Leading  (this info should be in the file header but is missing)

Precision Format XY 2.4         (this info should be in the file header but is missing)

When file with this parameters is imported, the holes coordinates will be correct but their diameters will be huge since imported values for T1 to T13 are interpreted as expressed in inches not millimeters.

Also I discover a third problem probably related with point 1

3 The mounting holes of connectors and the self affixed holes are not drilled but engraved with a surrounded   circle.  And this is logic because they are not included in the Excellon file.

The DRD file is herewith included as .txt file .

How can I include all drill related info, within Eagle, into an Excellon file so that I get  a good seamless connection with the CNC machine?

Can you help me here?

Thanks,

Jo Koene

    Hi,

can you tell me how do you generated the EXCELLON data? When I try here with my EAGLE version it looks correct:

    %

    M48

    M72

    T01C0.0236

    T02C0.0250

    T03C0.0300

    T04C0.0320

    T05C0.0360

    T06C0.0400

    %

    T01

    X7105Y5026

    X7105Y11526

    T02

    X1453Y6026

    X2256Y6026

    X2256Y8026

    X1453Y8026

    .......

    .......

All the values are in inch. Drill diameters and drill coordinates.

Maybe there could be more information about the data format in the excellon file header, but this could be pobably done by edition the [EXCELLON] section in eagle.def.

For placing mounting holes you have to use the HOLE command in EAGLE. The drill data will be extracted from layer 45, Holes. Could it be the case that you used the CIRCLE command for drawing them?

    Regards,

    Richard
