Is there a free viewer for Eagle, in the same way as CADSTAR provide a free viewer.

Is there a free viewer for Eagle ? in the same way as CADSTAR provide a free viewer.

We do not need or want to design boards, we just need to be able to examine the designs which our subcontractor has made for our company.

EXAMPLE

The CADSTAR Design Viewer is a free download that lets you share and access CADSTAR design data very easily on any of your preferred Windows platforms. The design data is accessible to any user, even the occasional users, with easy viewing and sharing of schematic and PCB data. It dramatically improves workgroup dynamics by increasing project productivity either in standalone mode or when used in conjunction in a CADSTAR design environment.

    It's very flexible.

As stated here, You can open up, view and print (any size) EAGLE files using the free version of EAGLE, on

    Linux, Windows and Mac.

Or, you can supply gerber files (the usual case) that can be opened with open source and with free tools. You can

also print to PDF or (my favorite for documentation purposes) to .png format.

We are not hobbyist, however we do want to view designs created by another company.  It seems that this should be permitted in the same way as board manufacturers can.

The free version of Eagle (EAGLE Light Edition) does not seem to be a 'free viewer'  the  Licence agreement states the following.

"This allows anybody who wishes to use EAGLE Light for their private hobby projects to do so. Also students can use this version for any educational projects. It is even ok to use this version in a commercial environment, as long as you just want to evaluate the program. As soon as you start using it for commercial projects, you will have to register it. As an exception to this, board manufacturers may use the Freeware Light Edition to generate production data (e.g. Gerber files) from board files they have received from EAGLE users."

I think you're looking for an issue that does not exist.

The text that you yourself pasted should cover you:

"As an exception to this, board manufacturers may use the Freeware Light Edition to generate production data (e.g. Gerber files) from board files they have received from EAGLE users"

If you really still believe that this does not cover your particular firm, since you just wish to 'examine the designs' as you say, why not ask your

subcontractor to supply the files in gerber format or PDF format? Both of these formats have both free, and open source viewers, take your pick.

    Hello Shabaz,
Thank you for the suggestion of using the Gerber or PDF format, however these viewing methods are not technical enough , eg using 'find' on a schematic or artwork, also tracing routes during fault finding does not really work on  a gerber viewer

The reason I need to be clear about the licence is that our IT manger is very very strict on licences , and will not allow us to install the Eagle Light Edition just for viewing purposes.

I asked the same question at 'CadSoft Technical Support' and I had this reply from  Alfred Zaffran of 'CadSoft Technical Support'

"The Eagle Freeware is the viewer, you can load all layouts (BRD) up to 16 copper layer, dimension of maximum, display all layers, export, print, run ULPs to export lists & mounting data ...,use CAM-Processor to export data at: gerber, excellon, HPGL ...."

I have now asked another question

Hello Alfred ,thank you for your reply. Can we have confirmation that a business can use the 'Eagle Freeware' as a viewer, without buying the product?. The Cadsoft licence does not seem to be clear on this point.
