Hey all,
I don't normally get THIS excited by software releases but I've just downloaded and installed the latest version of Autodesk EAGLE and it's got some excellent new features!
Top billing in the features list is that they've given EAGLE proper SPICE simulation capabilities which work across all supported platforms by building ngspice directly into EAGLE!
Gone are the days of trying to get it to work with LTSpice using the supplied ULP's, and that only really worked on Windows anyway. I can't wait to give this a whirl and I will try and do a blog post or two about this at some point.
Next up is Live DRC! EAGLE now gives visual feedback of DRC violations as you go meaning that the days of clicking the DRC button and whimpering when you see how long the list of violations you need to clear up is are coming to an end! Currently it is 100% live for the ROUTE command, other commands, for example MOVE, update the visual DRC representation when an action is completed. Hopefully they'll get more of these tools to be fully 100% live in time. This is a big step forward though!
Now we all know there has been a mirror board ULP which was accessible from the tools menu for a long time. The problem with this was it was not a true bottom side view of the board and actually altered the board data when viewing the bottom side (not cool!) so for a long time there have been repeated requests on various forums for a true bottom view of the board. Now it's here! In the layout there is now a button in the menu bar at the top next to the zoom buttons to switch between true bottom and top views of the board (cool!)
They've also been messing with the layer settings dialog. The updates are user friendly this time and make selecting appropriate layers much quicker with live update so you can see how it looks in the board without having to press the Apply button (which has been banished!). I'm a fan of these updates.
Finally for those of us that love EAGLE because of its powerful command line, they've given that a little TLC too and it now has autocomplete functionality. It's not a fully featured autocomplete yet, e.g. it doesn't do completion on directory / file names yet but it's a welcome addition. Nice
EDIT: I forgot to mention (thanks for the reminder geralds!) the new auto-axis switching and the reduced number of bend style options. It will now auto detect the direction on axis crossing and internally set the bend styles direction as appropriate. Nice
