Internal layers don't show up in 3D view?

Hi,

I'm new to PCB design, and wanted to use "internal planes" for ground planes in my design. However, I don't understand how Circuitstudio treats them differently than a signal plane.

My current very specific problem is that the internal planes don't show up in 3D view.

Thanks,

Kris

Ok, adding to my own question here. I figure out that the internal plane is just normally filled, which was helpful. I also realized it shows up as a cutout in when I view a "*.CSPcbDoc" file but not when I view a *.PcbLib" file.

Is this because the drawing of an internal layer requires a board to limit where it is drawn?

    Hello Kristoffer,

Since you say you are new to PCB design, you may not know that for historical reasons internal planes are done as negatives of the signal layers. This is true for all the various electrical PCB design software I have seen.

Shapes you draw on internal plane layers determine where copper is removed during etching.  Shapes you draw on internal (and outer) signal layers determine where copper is left after etching.

I find it easier to not use internal planes and just to use signal layers.

I'm not sure why you want to see the internal layers in 3D view but you should be able to do so and it might be clearer if you hide layers above it.

Thanks, great idea about signal layers, I think I'll stick to using signal layers too!
