How to assign multiple PCB footprint pads to a single pin on a schematic library component

Question

I'm trying to figure out how to assign multiple pads to a single pin on a schematic library component.

So far, my strategy has been to simply add extra hidden pins to the schematic symbol for the component that are placed directly on top of their matching partner pin. Then when you go to wire up the schematic, placing a wire to that pin should connect both the hidden and visible pin to that net, right?

At least that's how my logic went.

So, if my method is not the way to accomplish this, then what is the preferred method?

You could change the footprint in the footprint editor. When numbering the pads, just make pad number 1 and then make another pad number 1. Now you have two pads that are number 1. When you link it to your schematic library component, all pads that are labeled with number 1 will be attached to pin 1. Simple. This is also helpful when making other types off footprints for packages where there is a backplane and also a pin connection like T0-220 packages where the middle pin is also connected to the backplane.
