Variant only has one part

I am trying to create a variant of a project so that i can alter part values but the variant only contains "C1", all other parts (20 odd) are not listed.

I launch the variant manager and only the one part shows....

Very strange. Does it make any difference if you compile your design : Schematic editor Home | Project > Compile.
