Why can't I import .BRD files?

Hi all,

I know there's another thread on this subject, but it's a year old and I don't have Altium Designer or OrCAD.  I'm trying to import files with the extension .BRD, .ALG and .DSN.  The .DSN file imported fine and I am able to use the schematics generated by the import.  However, neither the .BRD or .ALG files will import.  The company says that other Altium users use the files all the time and don't have problems.  I get this error:

Are there any settings I can change in the File -> System Preferences -> Importers settings that would help with this?  Also, where does it log the events, warnings and errors?  Maybe the log will reveal something.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tony

Looking at the importer for CircuitStudio the BRD file is for Eagle - is your file an Eagle design, if so what version?

If you are trying to import OrCAD then you can see in the above the list of file types supported. I believe that OrdCAD 16.3 or later is not fully supported by CS.

    Hello Peter,

I was wondering about that also.  Here's what's going on.  I am going to use a "System On Module" (SOM) that has ARM Cortex CPUs for my project.  The SOMs mount on a carrier board where all the peripherals are broken out to, such as Ethernet, USB, audio, SPI, etc.  The company has pre-made carrier boards for evaluation, etc. but they provide the schematics and PCB layouts to make it easier for customers to make their own custom boards once they finish development.  This makes it much easier and a huge time saver as we can just cut out what we don't need and add any extra we do need.  They have an ftp site where we can download these templates.  Among the files, there are .dsn (OrCAD schematics), .alg (Allegro PCB) and .brd (Eagle PCB).  I think they exported these from Allegro.  Their support guy said that they have customers with Altium Designer and they can import these just fine.  I was able to import the .dsn file, but this is only schematics and I need the PCB layouts as well.  I have attached the file...  it wouldn't allow the content for some reason, so I emailed them to you, if you don't mind.  If you can do anything with them, I would greatly appreciate it.  I'm asking the manufacturer for another format also.  Thanks for all your help.

    Thanks,

    Tony

Hi Tony. Thanks for sending through the .brd file and it is Allegro rather than Eagle. A bureau with Altium Designer should be able to import the .alg PCB file and save as Altium Binary 5 format that would be suitable for importing into CircuitStudio.
