Merging PCB's

Sparkylabs
Sparkylabs over 6 years ago

For the purposes of cutting manufacturing costs I wanted to merge two designs. So I tried creating a blank PCB document in one of the projects and copying the two designs in. But on doing this all of the net information was lost, a lot of non existent short circuit errors were flagged and the various polygons that would have been connecting parts together suddenly poured around the pads and not connecting them as before.

Is there any way to use CS to merge 2 designs? The boards are made in pairs so it's a bit silly to pay for the tooling twice.

Altium is great for this.  CS is lacking in this department.  You should probably get a third party software to panelize the PCBs.  I don't know of any to recommend at this time.

Never tried this but the following might work. However I would suggest the PCB manufacturer can merge/panelize the designs for you.

    1. Make copies and backups of everything first and that both designs are fully in sync (schematic matches PCB).
    2. Create a project based on design#1
    3. With design#2 reannotate to avoid any designators used in design#1 and make sure any named nets are not duplicated in design#1.
    4. Add the scheets from design#2 into design#1
    5. Copy the PCB (components & tracks) from design#2 into design#1
    6. Run component links to fully relink the schematic to the PCB
    7. Run ECO to reload the netlist onto the PCB.
    8. Fixup any errors manually

I see, yes that would probobly work. I'd essentially have to make a single project with both schematics and then redo the designators

Not what i am trying to do i am afraid. I am trying to put 2 designs on the same tool. They actually get made in pairs so it makes sense too.
