Modifying a template file

Hello,

 

I'd like to modify a template file by adding my logo, removing some of the boxes like Size, Revisision, Drawn By, etc. I can't seem to be able to edit the lines and I can only add text. How do I remove boxes and text that is already there?

  • Klick in Circuit Studio at open filen, then choose the template file (file is in template folder). Then the template file is open and you can edit the file.

    I still can't add my logo or modify the structure of the template.

    Sounds like you're not actually editing a template file, but instead a schematic doc created with a template.  (Sorry if I'm telling you to suck eggs) You need to open the template file itself.

     

    By default they live in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Altium\CS\Templates

     

    I always make a copy (outside of Altium) and rename the template file to something suitable, then edit this copy.  That way I have a template on hand for each customer or Open Source project.

     

    You can then just open this template file within CS and it will be editable.  Once you've saved changes, you can use the template in new schematics (or apply it to old ones.)

    This works in Altium but it doesn't work in CircuitStudio. I can't select the CircuitStudio graphics image to remove it for example.

    I don't know what to suggest, as it works perfectly with CS 1.3 I'm using.  As soon as I open a .SchDot file I can edit it.

    I think I see your problem.  I've been trying to recreate this and I stumbled upon an inability to edit the template file. 

     

    Here is how I did it:

    I created a new schematic (*.SchDoc) and then saved that file as a template (*SchDot).  The problem now exists.  I cannot edit anything in the title area, including the graphic.  But I can edit the document parameters by right-clicking on the schematic.

     

    The required fix:

    Go to your template directory (C:\Users\Public\Documents\Altium\CS\Templates).  Find the template that you want to use and make a copy of it.  Rename it.  Open it.  Edit it.  Save it.  That's it.

     

    If you keep it in this folder then you can make it your default template when you open a new schematic.  CS doesn't seem to allow default templates to be used from other locations.  At least I can't do it.

     

    There doesn't seem to be a lot of CS online help.  This forum is a tremendous resource.  I think I'm going to start making help videos using CS.  Also, having used Altium for many years greatly extends my CS ability.  I prefer the interface of CS but Altium is a much better software.

    Hi Alexandre,

     

    I think you'll need to clear the template, please see below.

     

    Add a new Schematic and choose Save As. In the Save as type drop down, choose Advanced Schematic template (*.SchDot)

    It's recommended to save it into the C:\Users\Public\Documents\Altium\CS\Templates folder, but you can also have project tempates if you wish.

    Press O to open Document Options and click the Template tab.

    Press Clear Template.

     

    For existing templates:

     

    Open the file (e.g. drag the file from C:\Users\Public\Documents\Altium\CS\Templates onto CircuitStudio) and ensure the file is shown in the Projects panel with the SchDot extension (not SchDoc).

     

    Make the modifications to the template and save it into the Templates folder.

     

    You can apply this template to existing schematics by using Projects > Template, Update Current Template, or you can choose the new template. Templates can also be set in the Document Options.

     

    You can apply this template to any new schematics you'll create in the future by opening File > System Preferences, then go to Schematic > General and choose the template file from the Template drop down list.
