I always liked the work flow with Altium products, but have been an Eagle user for quite a while. I started considering Altium again when Eagle licensing policies changed. I am still pondering a switch and thinking about what type of project would result in a stressless transition - probably one without hard deadlines.

I agree with the majority above.  My thoughts:

• CircuitStudio feels as if it has many parts just lopped off from Altium Designer to justify the price but the workflow takes a hit. 
• There hasn't been any fixes (or released schedules for the fixes) to the 1.4 release that has some major issues.
• CircuitMaker seems to be a better product and it's free. 

I've been using Protel99 for years before moving to CS. A major reason for making the move was the need for some of my clients to have ODB++ output. However, as noted in the Forum, there seem to be serious bugs in ODB++ output. Still, there are some real benefits to making the move, in spite of the difficulties. I love the way that CS allows you to reroute traces by simply dragging them, with CS doing the work of shoving other traces out of the way within the constraints of Design Rules. However, I've had to give up some features readily available in Protel99, most notably Global Edit. Yes, you can sometimes use the Property Editor to change properties across a class of selected objects. However, more often, you end up changing only 1 object or no objects when you attempt to do this. So, you end up having to select each component individually and change its properties. I could give many examples, but here's a couple of trivial ones: If you want to change the font for all reference designator, it was trivial in P99 to select one reference designator, change its font, then select Global and adjust just what other types of components got the ref des fonts changed. In CS, I can't find any easy to make this happen, both in Schematic and Layout modes. To make things worse, CS generally doesn't let you select 'Locked' components. At a minimum, I should be able to unlock classes of components so that I can select them. Instead, I have to select each one, Unlock it, etc.

I'm a semi-retired mixed signal circuit design engineer who historically was used to having someone else to create PCB layouts using my (Orcad) schematic input. I bought Circuit Studio specifically to allow me to collaborate at the schematic/library level with a design house that prefers to use AD.

I used KiCad schematic for a while just prior to buying CS. KiCad has some basic features that Circuit Studio should have IMO. I'm no expert so maybe I just can't find these?

1. Provide some different schematic display theme choices or the ability to pick color for every display element type. I much prefer black background for the schematic editor because it works better with my monitors and my aging eyes.

2. I haven't found the means in the library manager/editor to copy a part with a new name or rename a part. Each part has a unique hex ID so why not be more flexible with the text name? If this was left out intentionally, then please bring it back.

3. The Vault is nice but I can't wait for it to some day have all the parts I want to use, so the ability to efficiently create and manipulate parts is at the top of my priorities.

I appreciate CS's ability to easily generate custom BOMs that I can import directly into Octopart. KiCad is miserable in that sense.

This really needs to have the following features that the full AD has:

1) Add Sch List panel like in AD

2) Find (and select and edit) similar objects

3) Parameter manager; for multi-object editing

4) Project packager wizard

5) Improvements to 3D capability including Free (unattached) 3D body support instead of just 3D bodies on components, measurements in 3D

6) CAM viewer integration.

7) Polygon pour manager

9) Place a proper layer stackup table in the drill/fabrication drawing

I'd be willing to pay something (maybe another $500?) for an add-in option to improve productivity to get these features of full AD unlocked.  But I would want to be able to trial the add-on features for a couple of weeks before committing to an additional fee.

If this is getting too close to full AD then I suggest some things that can stay different such as the IPC footprint wizard, bus routing, all the FPGA stuff, maybe even autorouting, flex circuit support, scripting.

Added; 6/1/2017:

I noticed earlier this week that there seems to be no easy or quick way to see all the list of the components on the schematic.  In AD I did this using the Sch List panel.  Then I could see all R's, C's, U's etc.  I could sort them, cross pick with the schematic, select certain ones, etc.  This seems like an essential feature so I'm putting this as a must have ahead of the find and select similar objects.  This isn't much of a problem for small schematics such as when evaluating but to me it makes it unusable for more than a small design with a handful of parts.

Yes, it works now.

It is a free CAD solution for users who do not mind public access for all but two projects (this seems limiting, at least to me). I'd still need to consider an alternative software package, and if that is CircuitStudio, then the suggestions envisioned would be nice to see I think.

I think it doesn't need to be free (just a nominal cost) and effectively could be an early release with less support and less hardened, but still feature-rich.

Isn't CircuitMaker their free hobbyist version?
