You'll find a microSD card in just about every portable device you can think of. This removable memory extension is about 4 times smaller than a standard SD card, which makes it the smallest removable Flash memory card on the market. Hence, the microSD card has made its way into applications ranging from digital still cameras and MP3 players through GPS navigation devices to mobile phones.
The microSD card interface is an expensive IC that requires protection. We have introduced a new device - the BGF 117 - that protects this interface from being destroyed by an electrostatic discharge (ESD) event and from malfunction caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI). The BGF 117 achieves this by combining high-level ESD protection devices with an EMI filter in one small device. It provides simultaneous protection for a total of 7 lines - 3 data lines, the data/direction control line, clock line, command line and voltage supply line.
The BGF 117solves numerous design challenges by:
a) reducing the system bill of materials, also cutting logistical and pick&place effort
b) minimizing the PCB area occupied by standard building blocks to leave more room for new and sophisticated applications
c) integrating high-level ESD protection to immunize the system against ESD strikes and enhance reliability
d) implementing EMI filters to prevent the system from interference from unwanted frequencies, which can adversely affect data transfer and data integrity
e) designing in compliance with regulations and specifications
